I am a US citizen & my British husband is a lawful, DOCUMENTED, permanent resident (he has to wait another 17 months before he can become a citizen). We want to buy a handgun, for personal safety in our home. Does anyone know; would the fact that he is not yet a citizen effect us getting a gun?
I have a CRAZY relative (brother), who has sworn to kill me (he attacked me at Christmas, breaking 2 of my fingers, giving me a fat lip & black eye - yet, believe it or not, when Police arrived, I WAS ARRESTED, apparently because I was crying & upset - he DEMANDED the DA take me to trail, but thank God a jury of my peers saw the injustice & aquitted me of all charges).
He was really pissed that I was aquitted & has now (5 months later) gone so far as to say, to a friend, that he could get to me, in my home, 1 late night & strangle me to death, long before the police could arrive to help me (we live in the country & my husband works nights every 2 months - which he knows).
The Judge that presided over my case, was outraged that the DA further victimised me & that I was the real VICTIM. She also knew that [he] is a very serious risk to me, so she asked me after the verdict was read, if I wanted her to issue a restraining order to protect myself, which of course I did/do (this I am told is VERY unusual for a presiding Judge to ask me if I wanted RO) - but I know that this piece of paper will not stop him from killing me, if & when he should decide to.
[His] recent comments (2 weeks ago) about breaking in to my house & strangling me, has now convinced me that I MUST take some steps to protect myself & my family (I have a 1 yr old, 3 yr old & 5 yr old), but I know nothing of guns & I have no idea where to go to find out. I want to be able to trust the sources in which I get the informtion, because I am such a novice.
I love & trust this website & forum, so I thought that my fellow Republicans could help me. I am really scared. He is HUGE (outwieghs me by 250 pounds), he was in the Marines for 2 years in the 80's (although he was asked to leave, or be thrown out for pulling a gun on a Master SGT).
I have ordered pepper spray (for BEAR, because he is the size of a bear) to use for protection, until I am able to get some information about buying a gun and make a purchase.
I live in Washington State - PLEASE HELP ME, I don't know where else to turn.
Not a wise choice. If the man is at least 250 lbs. a nine will kill him, but it will not stop him. Contrary to television, pistol shots are rarely fatal, and the victim almost *never* drops over immediately unless you have the nerves and skill to put one right between his eyes.
The most important thing if you are going to purchase a firearm is aquiring the proper mindset. First, go to blockbuster and rent the entire third season of "24." If you can get through that, order a book by Col. Jeff Cooper called "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth."
Do that, and you'll at least know what "getting it" looks like.
what are you talking about? you have completely lost me with your '24' & 'getting it' statements.
Well, I must have hit a berve and you are correct about the time , I said 11:30EDST, that would make it 8:30pm west coast time and you still showed up as a member on 5-16-05. Since default time on FR for posting articles is west coast time, the sign up date depends on "where the poster lives "IIRC. So forgive me if I am wrong but I still think I smell a rat.
You are better-off not getting a gun than getting one without the proper mind-set to actually use it.
The ability of human predators to distinguish prey from fellow predators is well known... even if the prey happens to be holding a gun. My references were to aid you in aquiring the proper mind-set without straying too far from popular culture.
BTW, you have to understand that many of us old timers here have been scammed by trolls before. One was classygreeneyedblond, another I believe was snowbunny who tried to make us believe someone they were not. I see from a google search you have asked alot of questions on different forums that you are looking for a border collie that your husband by your statements is a carpenter. So, you have been back to the states since Jan 2004, a blond with long hair and you want to know why your roots are turning black. You have become a computer genious from talking to geeks on a message board and they have even dedicated a thread too you. And on every board you posted the first words out of your mouth is that you are a novice on the subject at hand and you marriage is strained because youe computer makes to much noise in the bedroom. To tell you the truth, I think you are just lonely and it makes you feel good that people take the time to respond to you.Have a wonderful life and welcome to FreeRepublic.
Better Check that: a SLUGgun is waaaay better
Basically, It's a shotgun with a Rifled or Grooved barrel for shooting Sabot "slugs" or bullets.
Kicks like a mule but gives yer opponent a 1500 to 2000 Feet per Second ( FPS ) whack.
If your life is tuely in danger, the first step is to act like you're in the witness protection program and move, hopefully without leaving clues as to your new location. Arming yourself isn't a bad idea, but you're better off if you can avoid the confrontation rather than hoping to win it if it happens. I don't know your financial situation or other limitations, but if I had the means, I'd find a way to disappear to the extent possible. You can do things like establish a trust and buy property under the trust name so that it isn't in your name, have your mail go to a drop and have it forwarded to you, etc. A lot of trouble, but if the threat is real, what steps wouldn't you go to to increase your chances?
As for whether your British husband influences whether or not you can own a firearm: no. Assuming you yourself can own a weapon legally, you're fine. You're the gun's owner, not him. He can still use it, just not own it. And I'm not even sure of the last point. US law might allow legal residents to own firearms. Consult an attorney.
Why would we not want Laz to see that?
I tried the .45 at my ccw class. It had a good kick, felt rougher on my wrist than my .44
I hit my mark on every shot...but I'm not sure a .45 is for me. There's more to operating one, and I need to be concentrating on hitting my mark 100% of the time instead of training myself to follow all the steps of a 45ACP while under duress!
May I suggest the Mossberg HP-410. Really nice little home protection shotgun. Simple and easy to use and it won't blow through walls and hit the kiddies. Nice little point and shoot weapon. My wife loves hers.
Oh boy. The self-appointed board monitor. Shoot first, ask questions later, if at all.
You know what? I'm done with this particular discussion. I'm on the verge of becoming REALLY impolite - and for no good reason, really.
Sounds like you've got your own little piece of heaven there in CA. And thanks for the 2A support - we sure do need it!
OK, one more post here and done - now, this is a prime example of stuff you ignore. With that whiny "I'm really the victim here" mentality, you'd almost think this was some sort of liberal wuss trying to make us all think he/she is a conservative. ;-)
Lots of luck to you RT, and hope it all works out.
It was late when I wrote my first reply. To be clear, in general, no license is required to own a flamethrower although local regulations may vary.
For indoor residential use where over penetration is a concern, a short barreled shotgun with #6 shot is best imo. At indoor distances #6 shot will pack a whallop without overpenetration risks presented by larger shot sizes.
Concerning use of slugs or bullets, if trained police officers some of who weren't directly threatened (therefore not under high stress) can fire 120 rounds at close range at a suspect and only hit the suspect four times non-fatally and one friendly non-fatally, how much better performance can be expected of an individual who doesn't train regularly and is needing to defend themself under a high stress situation?
It's hard to go wrong when you are facing each other at 15 feet in a hallway and you have a short barreled shotgun.
well, I suppose a thanks is in order to you for proving that I am at least a person and not a 'troll', although nobody has explained to me yet WHY would I lie? AND If I was a 'troll', wouldn't I change the user name that I always use? Trolls are uncover arent they? Could somebody explain to me, a 'novice' what a 'Troll' is & what it does???????
As for whether I am lonely or not, has absolutely NOTHING to do with my post here.
Again, thank you to all the people who offered their help, like I said in earlier posts.
I now understand that fierce loyalty to my country & my President makes me a suspected 'Troll', so I have now changed my profile. I am really sorry that this issue has caused so much friction, as I said before, I was just looking for some help - again, I admit I should not have revealed the situation behind my problem (D'oh!), in hind sight it would have made getting the help, a lot easier, right?
As for me being a novice, I know when to humble myself & when to admit I know Jack. Yes, I learned a lot from my 'geek' friends who named a thread after me. They were ever so kind & really tried to help me. I would certainly not say I am a genius, just a person trying to learn.
Whenever I have had a problem and posted on a good message board, I have ALWAYS recieved help and I thought the same would be true here. THIS is the reason I asked here, I had no idea I would be labelled a 'traitor' by the very group that I turned to for advice, but hey, I have learned a few things.
I do appreciate the background check though, I think my 'honor' has been restored - no?
One last thing - KEAT, you deserved the retort you got. You are no gentleman, you had no right to make such a nasty comment to me. Your comment just shows that you enjoy TRYING to hurt people you don't even know - you must be so proud. As for my affiliation with fairus.org, at least I am doing something to change the world, what are you doing, other than verbally abusing women????????
