information needed about 1st gun purchase

Posted on 05/15/2005 8:37:08 PM PDT by rosy_toes

I am a US citizen & my British husband is a lawful, DOCUMENTED, permanent resident (he has to wait another 17 months before he can become a citizen). We want to buy a handgun, for personal safety in our home. Does anyone know; would the fact that he is not yet a citizen effect us getting a gun?

I have a CRAZY relative (brother), who has sworn to kill me (he attacked me at Christmas, breaking 2 of my fingers, giving me a fat lip & black eye - yet, believe it or not, when Police arrived, I WAS ARRESTED, apparently because I was crying & upset - he DEMANDED the DA take me to trail, but thank God a jury of my peers saw the injustice & aquitted me of all charges).

He was really pissed that I was aquitted & has now (5 months later) gone so far as to say, to a friend, that he could get to me, in my home, 1 late night & strangle me to death, long before the police could arrive to help me (we live in the country & my husband works nights every 2 months - which he knows).

The Judge that presided over my case, was outraged that the DA further victimised me & that I was the real VICTIM. She also knew that [he] is a very serious risk to me, so she asked me after the verdict was read, if I wanted her to issue a restraining order to protect myself, which of course I did/do (this I am told is VERY unusual for a presiding Judge to ask me if I wanted RO) - but I know that this piece of paper will not stop him from killing me, if & when he should decide to.

[His] recent comments (2 weeks ago) about breaking in to my house & strangling me, has now convinced me that I MUST take some steps to protect myself & my family (I have a 1 yr old, 3 yr old & 5 yr old), but I know nothing of guns & I have no idea where to go to find out. I want to be able to trust the sources in which I get the informtion, because I am such a novice.

I love & trust this website & forum, so I thought that my fellow Republicans could help me. I am really scared. He is HUGE (outwieghs me by 250 pounds), he was in the Marines for 2 years in the 80's (although he was asked to leave, or be thrown out for pulling a gun on a Master SGT).

I have ordered pepper spray (for BEAR, because he is the size of a bear) to use for protection, until I am able to get some information about buying a gun and make a purchase.

I live in Washington State - PLEASE HELP ME, I don't know where else to turn.

When did free republic become a general advice board?

There are dozens of dedicated firearms sites where people who want info can get more and better information than they can get here.

As others have already advised, the best thing to do would be to consult a lawyer about your husband's ability to purchase or use a firearm. Even if he's barred from ownership because of his citizenship status, it shouldn't make a difference within the confines of your own home as to who uses it if the worst should happen. It's only outside of the home where there's usually an issue as to legality.

If you make the decision to purchase, try a few different firearms and calibers and see which one you can best handle. Then get lessons and practice. Good luck to you.

It's actually a pretty good place to get advice on guns and ammo, computer problems, where to live, and how to solve a property dispute, among other things. In case you hadn't noticed, there are people here knowledgeable about just about everything.... If you can weed through all the crap.

Yepper. Right from the book of Trolling for Dummies. But forgot step one..don't make your profile look like an OBVIOUS suckup to the 'community'. Doh! Scritch scritch.. Hence the, I Love F/R and been a long time lurker, and agree with everyone here, but only a few, sometimes... I don't agree with. But, since I'm brainless after reading your very informative site, I need you to save my life.

Only thing missing was the DRUDGE Siren light.

Yes but if you look through the posts, there is quite a bit of sound information.

Well, this is my point - there is good info to be had here, because there are a lot of very knowledgeable people who want to help. Unfortunately, anyone looking for info here now is going to have to sit here scratching his or her head about all the other crapola that's been posted.

Now, what impression does THAT give to the casual reader of FR?

Actually, I've been around since late 2000. BAck then it was more politics and less random junk taking up space.

I have no idea why this is stillin news/activism, other than the mods are all napping.

If she can handle it, then it might be ok,- you didn't say what she loaded it with- I personally believe that a .44 Mag round is way too over-penetrative for a defense round. These are designed for hunting large critters. And many .44 Special rounds are too puny for a personal defense round- in the 250 fps range. And, yes, I know that a .44 Special can be reloaded to some very effective velocities, but no one in their right mind should use a reload to defend themselves with.

Your story reeks of cow dung. I'm betting you did something really really nasty and got away with it.
