Geeky director Woody Allen might be a quintessential New Yorker, but he says he is sick of making movies in Manhattan. His latest, 'Match Point' which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, is set and filmed in England.
'I did the film in England because it is increasingly difficult to get financing in the United States,' said Allen. 'Its become more prevalent for US studios and financiers to participate in a project. They want to have a say in casting and read the script.'
'I can never work like that. I don't let people read the scripts. I want the money in a brown paper bag and to give them the film a few months later, and that is that.' In London that is the way it was. There is no rigamarole from people who want to participate.'
'Match Point' a dark tale set in London high society, stars Scarlett Johansson, Emily Mortimer, and Johnathan Rhys Meyers.

This film must have been done on a shoestring budget!
Good grief. He looks lost.
This is like Peter Bogdonavitch (sp?) in reverse.
I'm no fan of Woody's recent films, but he's right about this. Scripts are rewritten by hacks in accordance with what's worked for investors in the past. That's why so many movies are boring, predictable and increasingly trashy.
Perhaps that's because none of your movies have been a box office hit since Annie Hall in the late 70's.
Guess I'll be the odd one here: I love Woody Allen films! Just about all of them.
I haven't seen "Melinda and Melinda" yet, but I will, and I'm sure it will be better than "House of Wax" and 90% of the other movies out now. . .
Woody, you haven't made a good movie in decades. Your films suck, get over yourself.
Those days never existed. Stories of directors struggling with studios are as old as Hollywood itself. The only directors allowed relative free reign were the ones who consistently delivered financial success, like DeMille. "Red Ink" Allen's arrangements are the exception, rather than the rule, and his refusal to allow the studio to even see the script is unique, as far as I know.
Woody. What did you do with your money?
You don't need OPM (Other People's Money) to create your art. If you do, find a single benefactor to sponsor your projects. But don't cry when they want some say over how their money is spent.
Or you could go to some socialist land in Europe and get State money. But they would probably ask for something in return, like you renounce your citizenship for theirs.
"House of Wax" is not a movie. It is a star vehicle for the Hollywood entertainment machine.
Completely disposable. Take one old title which has been shot several times, add some people from People, get a song by some flash in the pan artist so you can air the "trailer" (er video) on MTV around the clock...
"Those days never existed."
Well, briefly. United Artists was founded by filmmakers who want control and money.
Quit using other people's money. Everyone has to make concessions in life otherwise.
Mel Gibson did it "his way".

Woody's sick of making movies in Manhattan?
I'm sick of Woody making movies - in Manhattan, Panama, Cincinnati, location's not the problem.
Woody. What did you do with your money?

Child support for his kids with Mia Farrow?
He's STILL supporting one of Mia's kids.

But I think Mia did take him to the cleaners, if I remember correctly. Hell hath no fury and all that. Bravo Mia!
