It is a matter of principle, nothing more. Free men, and theoretically the legal system of our republic, find prior restraint to be abhorrent to the principles of our Constitution.
Is there any absolute right to own guns? No. But those that state that no one has the right to own guns should be viewed with the same suspicion as an avowed communist. In the USA, excessive attempts at prior restraint is what the 2nd Amendment and owning guns were intended to prevent. I won't argue nitpicky details. I will only state that any politician that fears the combat capability of the populace merely recognizes their own immorality and corruption. A just and moral man may die at the barrel of a gun, but in a moral society many more just men will rise to his defense.

People should be able to "control" their own guns. But for some reason, most "gun control" is antithetical to that notion.

I'm 5'3" 135 lbs. Most criminals are quite a bit bigger than this. With my .38 S&W I even the odds. I've never understood why the most strident anti-firearms folks are the smallest and weakest among us.

The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.

I stood the watch against the Russians in Europe. My dad, grandfathers and their brothers fought the Japs and then the Germans twice. My gggrandfathers shot the yankee government troops and their fathers killed Mexican infantry in Texas. My ggggrandfathers David McGee and the Barkwell brothers killed redcoats. Before that my French family fought the French Crown and my English Family the English Crown.
No telling who my family and I may have to shoot next time to stay free .....

The 2nd Amendment. Guns save lives. Only criminals get guns if law abiding citizens are banned from owning guns.

1: A firearm permits me, in extremis, to defend my home, life, family, community, and country against any and all agressors. I should be able to own the best devices I can afford for that purpose.
2:'Gun Control' presumes I will not exercise good judgement in assessing threats and dealing with those threats accordingly, with the appropriate amount of force. I object to that assumption.
3:As an idealogy, it (gun control) further makes the assumption that I would be more likely to use inappropriate force or use force inappropriately if I were to posess a more sophisitcated or intrinsically capable firearm.
4:My guns are my property. NO one should be able to take my property without a valid reason. With no instances of causing unjustifiable harm to anyone, there exists no justification for taking my guns because of something I might be capable of doing.
5: Gun control advocates focus on an inanimate object as the root of social problems, instead of the antisocial people who cause those problems.
6:There is inherent intellectual dishonesty in continually seeking to change the rules, one step at a time, when the ultimate goal of gun control advocates is the unilateral disarmament of American citizens.
7: Why, at 19, could a young man control a main battle tank with all its weapon systems, and not be allowed to have a pistol at home, especially the home he laid his life on the line to defend?
8: Guns have fed and protected me, and enabled me to feed and protect others. I will not give that up.
9: It does not matter how many rounds the gun will hold, nor how quickly they can come out of the barrel, only where the first one goes.
10: Ultimately, my cold, dead hands may need something to hang on to.

Those who seek to disarm me (or society in general) either intend to kill me, or enslave me (or society in general). Neither is acceptable to me, and I am allowed to take it personally because the laws that would do so apply to me personally.

It (gun control) eliminates the individual American citizen's ability -- and God-given right -- to defend himself against a tyrannical government.
And that's what the Second Amendment is all about.
