Atv riders in my area also seem to have a lack of respect for peoples private property rights and our right to live without the constant noise. They figure since it is rural they can ride where they want. The ploice refuse to do anything about any of it even though there is private property damage and destruction of public lands. Not to mention the things are not street legal here and they are the primary mode of transportation for those who wish to drink and drive. It seems unreasonable to me that 50 mph down my street is ok. Next moron on my property gets a firearm dischrged in his general direction. Maybe the county sherrif will take us seriously. All winter it is the snowmobiles and all summer it is the atvs. I pick a flower on my river property and I probably break some federal law but some disrespectful moron can put two foot ruts on MY land and there is nothing done about it.

Interesting.

I know a guy, he owns a few hundred acres in Herkimer County, NY.

Off-roaders have torn the place up.

Only, the local doctor, across the street, raised a rucus about it.

He had to sell and move. Life became - unbearable.

So...what should my FRIEND do?

Find out where they live in the city, put your tractor on the trailer, go to town and plow their yard up.

Y'know what a caltrop is? They work. It's probably illegal to discuss piano wire here...

Laser pointers make brake lights come on. (or, so I hear)

Next moron on my property gets a firearm dischrged in his general direction.

Bad move: noisy (illegal within 500' of a structure in my area). Hunting slingshots are fun - mine keeps the deer away from my flowers, and I can target well enough almost to 50 yards. Does your state require a carry permit on your own property?

Land use issues. This might be helpful to find out any recourse. This site is PRO-OFFROADING and against enviro-wackos. Off-roaders, like hunters, should ask for permission before using someones land.

I agree with you completely. However take heed on doing this. I know a guy in AR that did just this and he ended up in jail/fines/loss of gun rights/probation/etc.

Don't know what they will do to you there in WI.

I would think you might be better off just making a Citizen Arrest and filing formal charges.

Good luck.

Disputes over land use are not limited to these vehicles.

The real problem is that the population of America has doubled in my lifetime.

So we see articles popping up on FR frequently describing conflicts arising out of conflicting demands on our limited real estate. Can we have a driving range in Suburban Va? Should we have fire roads in federal lands? Should ranchers be permitted to continue grazing stock on federal lands? Should we permit deer and even mountain lions to encroach into suburbia.

Out west they say, " a developer is someone who wants to build his cabin in the woods and a conservationist is a fella who built his cabin last year."

The clashes often smack of cultural differences. The Sierra Club is elitist and wants you nowhere near their wilderness except on its terms. Its prejudice is to favor backpackers and they fight horses and motorcycles with a righteous indignation. Alas, fox hunting is despised by the whole of the left and their media.

We will continue to see dispute after dispute as we ignore the threat to the land from increasing claims of a growing and increasingly mobile population.

Stop most immigration now.

Video cameras are now man's/woman's best friend! Every court room has a VHS casset player and people think a little more when they see a camera on them!

If they're coming on you property, put up a sign that says: "WE SHOOT EVERY THIRD TRESPASSER! THE SECOND ONE JUST LEFT!!!"

Now that you have some ideas on self help that are actually legal... cwitcherbellyachin!!!

Across rural America, angry skirmishes are increasingly common between property owners and off-roaders squaring off over dwindling open space.

I have news for these bozos...if the property is owned, it is not "open". Without permission, anyone destroying or damaging other people's property while tresspassing should be treated for the criminal they are. Most people in states like Idaho, Wyoming, etc. where I live understand this...but sometimes we get out of staters or recent move ins who do not and they have to be schooled.

These people in this story are lucky the farmer didn't go back to his truck and get a rifle and settle the thing. IMHO, he was well within his rights to do so.

No. Razor wire at neck height. Much quieter.

Check your local laws..
If you post your property properly you may be legally justified in using firepower against trespassers..

But you DO have to "post" your property.. (Fair Warning to Trespassers)
I believe you are able to specifically state in your warning that "trespassers will be shot" and be within your legal limits..

But, like I said, check your local laws first..
And maybe check with a lawyer..
Laws change, and it's been a few years..
