Hi Howlin :)

It is in my opinion, Nuclear fallout from the Terri threads.

The Bush and now Laura bashing on a personal level has gone through the roof. Debating policy is one thing but the car is off the road and sitting in a ditch right now.

Rush gave a very clear explanation of what Laura said and he supported her yesterday on his show.

Howlin I couldn't have said it better myself! As I hear Rush say once, The Constitution has no amendment in it that says you have a right not to be offended!

Flame wars are very unbecoming of FReepers. I have seen it too. Some here need to go back to using some manners. Most of our parents taught us if you have nothing constructive to say, say nothing at all.
We could, as a group, be a whole lot kinder to newbies too, even if they do something wrong. Tell them yes, but no need to put them down and bash them. And I am not talking about trolls, or zotts
To jump onto a thread simply to flame, is childish and counterproductive.

Which is why I generally leave a thread as soon as one starts. And don't generally post much.

The people bashing Britain need to realize that conservatism over in Europe is not the same as American conservatism, but that does not mean we can't work together, and that does not mean we should be enemies or consider others inferior.

They are fighting for what they see as right in their situation, while we are fighting for what we want in ours.

It bothers me to see Freepers denigrate thet British conservatives as somehow being not real conservatives because their views are more moderate than ours in a lot of ways.

Who are we to tell them what they should believe? It is their country, not ours.

It is times like this in which I wonder if the left isn't half right that a lot of Americans have an almost imperialist attitude that we know best for everybody on how to run their governments.

If you never see the person, it is much easier to be a jerk. You can ignore their replies back to you. You can't ignore someone across the table shouting in your face.

Now it seems that any opinion other than the exact "party line" opens one up to all sorts of name calling and insults.

Hold on, here. Many would think that you are referring to the GOP line. That very well may be, but you have more than a few here who will disparage you viciously if you are not as animated as they are about their issue(s).

So that "party line" thing goes both ways.

There is a coterie of irrational, bigoted and downright slanderous individuals who are trying to convince the good people of this board that in spite of all that Britain has done and all the gestures of friendship that we have shown, is just as bad an ally as say, France.

MadIvan,

I'm sorry to hear of this--I didn't know such a thing was happening..

I'll miss you. I have enjoyed your posts whenever I've come across them. Great Britain remains one of our closest and most trusted allies, IMNSHO.

It was truly a distinct pleasure to visit your country several years ago. Despite a few strange Londoners we encountered on a train, the people of your land are a warm and friendly lot. One of my dreams is to someday make it back over to the Lake Country, set up camp in a cozy B&B, and spend the days walking and soaking in the Lord's creation.

Wishing you the very best.

Godspeed,
k2

I don't mind the flame wars. They happen all the time here. You have to have thick skin and a short memory.

Furthermore, I have my own agendas and personal thoughts about issues important to me. But I have opinions about everything. For example, I never said on a thread "Maybe Terry Schiavo is in a better place now. At least she never had a job sent to India.":)

I don't go back (Jan 98) as far as you do, but I agree with your post 100%. The forum is just BIGGER - - more voices.

The character of this forum has changed some. Early on, FR had some pretty radical views, but everyone was united against Clinton. Today there are more mainstream Republicans on FR with a sprinking of people that have their one issue that they hold very strong views about. Most of the more radicals have left. But IMHO, there is more of a mob mentality today. Depending on the thread, it is either from the one issue posters or the mainstream Republicans. FR is moderated fairly well today, but the character of the forum has changed. Some for the good, and some for the worst.

...So many of the "terri was murdered folks" stood in front of that hospice/nursing home and did nothing....

The conscience (our soul)is an interesting part of us. We often rationalize our guilt into blaming others so we can make allowances for what we know deep down was wrong. For if one truly believes their stand was one of righteousness and just cause, than there would be no need to continue to try to find fault in others to justify one's stand.

Some posters have been pretty vicious about all Europeans lately... including the Brits.

That's the thing. I could never figure out why some on this site run down the country of a foreign Freeper when that Freeper is a CONSERVATIVE and ALLy to our's.

It's the epitome of counter-productive stupidity.

This especially applies to those from nations such as France where the government is corrupt and anything but an ally.

Well, I worry that the voices of reason are walking away from this board. The people of Britain are some of the most down to earth and genuine people on this planet. I had the pleasure of working briefly in the Southampton/Eastleigh area a couple years ago and it was great.

The British have been our allies and we theirs practically since the Revolutionary War. On the other thread, where Mad Ivan writes his farewell, he notes that some on this board consider the British to be 'as bad an ally as say, France'. Its hard for me to believe any right thinking person, regardless of political ideology could look me in the sys and say those words. Writing them and hiding behind a FReep handle must make all the difference.

Ivan, don't go. Lurk for a while, take a break. We need your voice of reason in this neck of the internet.

OC...

In the early 80s, I once had dinner with Congressman Larry McDonald. (He later died on KAL 007). Anyway, he told a story about a man who claimed he had seen a purple elephant just walk by. No matter what anyone said, the man would not be persuaded he hadn't seen that purple elephant. He was just too detached from reality to be convinced and it was a total waste of time to try to do so.

Sometimes we run into folks like that around here. There are better ways to spend our time.

Duff, I did not know MadIvan was leaving and very much appreciate the heads up.

Perhaps the people *truly* interested in flame wars should exit the thread.

People have become too easily offended. Yes the Terri and Laura threads were bad but that's why you STAY OFF THEM if it bothers you.

Instead, people have this inate desire to brawl with others and then complain about being hit.
