YOU can add striped bass to the mix since today is the opener for the much sought after gamefish. Flounder and stripers will be the targets for anglers this weekend. Fishing for the winter flatties has been decent, with a few more fish being taken in Raritan and Jamaica Bays as the waters continue to warm.
The fact is, anglers are releasing more stripers than they are catching winter flounder, a situation that won't be reversed until the fisheries are closed for a few years to allow the species to recover.
It would hurt business the early part of the spring, but it is a small fishery that does not bring out a lot of anglers, and if there is to be a future for these fish, we have to start somewhere.
I can remember when you had no problem taking 15-25 fat flounder for just a half day of fishing; now, anglers are happy to go home with three fish. There used to be a great fishery in Moriches Bay, now there are just a handful of fish being caught. The same holds true for most of Long Island.
The New York Bight, including Jamaica and Raritan Bays, has become one of the better producers of winter flounder. If you put in your time and work the chum pots you can take 6-12 fish in these waters.
You won't have any problems taking stripers this weekend, especially in lower New York Harbor. Bass are coming down the Hudson in large numbers and starting to move down the Jersey Coast and along Long Island's beaches.
