Why this FreeRepublic's obsession with kitty cats?

I do much more surfing that posting and notice an unhealthy obsession with "kitty cats" on the FreeRepublic, why is this. I admit the last pic I saw of the cat in the glass was aweful cute but what gives?

I like cats, I hate dogs, don't get me wrong, just trying to understand the hard core freeper psyche. Perhaps the silence calms fear in an evil world (for there ownwers) and convey the feeling that everything is alright?
