EMERGENCY!
THERE ARE 20 IBIZAN HOUNDS IN OMAHA NEBRASKA
IN IMMEDIATE NEED OF HOMES!
I'm not sure the breeder is on the net. It certainly isn't easy to find one for sale.
My guess is the breeders will not be happy to see 20 rescue dogs at once.
Good luck to you. They look like beautiful dogs..just wondering.is there a distant relation to the Saluki?
I've already hit every Usenet dog forum and yahoo group there is.
Mrs Bednarski is "working the channels" like crazy.
I found this link if anyone is intersted in seeing some of the dogs that are proabably in the pound;
http://www.geocities.com/ihound1/songbird_ibizan_hounds.htm
Seeing them makes me sick.
One of them, "Bear" is the daddy of my two youngest girls and several of the others are my two older dogs brothers and sisters.
"She", fortunately, now lives in Canada so Jack and Izzy's mom is safe, at least....:(
I don't know what's become of sweet, lovely Hannah.
Believe me, all the 'Beezer people are freaking out right now. big time.
[but no one wants to be "mean" in case it screws up the chance for the dogs to get good homes and there's still 10 other dogs that the HS hasn't gotten "surrendered" yet]
Sorta kinda.
They're both considered "primitive breeds" and probably descended from some Egyptian/African "proto-dog" way back in the dim and distant past.
Pictures of Ibizans have been found that date back well over 6000 years.
Salukis, I'm not sure of the date.
The pound is being great about it all.
One of the pound employees shows Borzois and recognized the breed and called Mrs Bednarski herself and alerted her to what was happening.
From what I understand, they're updating shots, doing all they can health-wise and working on foster homes and kennel arrangements.
It doesn't sound like they're of a mind to be killing them.
The terrible thing is that they will all be spayed and neutered.
Some of the greatest Wishsong bloodlines will dead-end because of this.
Jane [my friend/breeder] worked for decades to keep the breed true-to-type instead of "Americanizing" it like so often happens.
I really, really wish I could take one. I adore sighthounds and I have been devastated by the recent death of my old greyhound from renal failure. Hope these guys find great homes ASAP.
Call Jane and tell her that Shari sent you.
The "Underground Doggie railroad" can help with getting it there...:)
Prayers are always cheerfully accepted...:)
Thanks!
I'll need to talk to my husband - he may not be as into the idea as I am, since we just went through a living hell with Sparky. But if he agrees I'll call her. :)
Ibizans are famously healthy, they live to be 13-15 and their obnoxiously joyous approach to life will bowl him right over.
You think *my* hubby ever intended to have *4* of them running amok and giggling through the house?.....LOL!
You'll be going from a sweet "comfy couch potato" to an "angel-in-the-whirlwind" merry prankster and you'll love it...;)
[-5- five week old puppies!...wheee!]
My daughter's dog is neutered. He is beautiful, but too shy to show. He's also had several seizures. If these rescues were show quality, it's a shame to lose them.
You need a new dog Ping!!
Oh, you're making it hard ... ;) I've been around Ibizans at shows, and I'm familiar with the general behavior of all sighthounds. They're extremely cool dogs and when I saw your posting I was just like, "oooooooooh ..." An Ibizan puppy sounds good right about now, LOL. But not only are we trying to have a baby, we just got hit with a $2,500 vet bill from trying to save Sparky the greyhound. I think Alex wmight freak if I bring up getting another dog. But I will chance it and ask him.
He's an Ibizan?
They're not known for seizures.
Have his ears checked.
Seriously.
Vestibular disease can mimic epilepsy.
My old Ibizan died because none of the local vets would listen to me when I told them her "seizures" -weren't-.
She was fighting to regain her balance and had deep inner ear damage from an undetected ear infection.
Do his eyes dart rapidly back and forth when he "seizes"?
[nystagmus]
Does he have periodic random problems with balance?
Does he shake his head frequently or otherwise paw at his ears?
Does he hold one ear at an "odd" angle, if only slightly?
They were of great show quality.
Several of them are the brothers and sisters of the top Ibizan in Canada right now.
p Ain't that cuuuute?....;)
[I'd much rather *FReepers* got them, if ya know what I mean]....:))
At the suggestion of another FReeper;

Some lines seem to be prone to seizures.
No ear problems or problems with balance. Probably half a dozen seizures in the first year and a half. None recently. Complete, sudden, fall down and lose consciousness seizures. Week and confused afterwords.
You can see from the pictures he's perfectly coordinated and happy. When he's in a dog park with other dogs he loves to show off his speed and agility. He can run circles around anything on legs.
