THERE ARE 20 IBIZAN HOUNDS IN OMAHA NEBRASKA
IN IMMEDIATE NEED OF HOMES!
I'm not surprized that there a few available and that they are not kennel dogs. The few I've met have been sweet tempered and perhaps too sensitive for kenneling. If there are long waiting lists for puppies that may help the situation. I've seen a few of these large rescue efforts and they depend on getting the word out. Posting this on B boards is helpful. I'm going to send this info out to some dogs friends with lists.
This is true. It took my daughter a year to "qualify" and find a willing seller. As it is she had to agree that the seller could buy the dog back at will if any neglect was suspected.
Now the truth squad. Ibizans are hunters. That does not mean they help people hunt. It means they do the hunting. They prefer rabbits and squirrels, but will settle for cats if they are available. While I was caring for my daughter's beezer I had to provide all kinds of safe rooms and hidie holes for the cats. I nearly lost a cat.
They can also be one person guard dogs. You should not have one if you are not willing to monitor it around guests and strangers. If these rescued dogs have not been properly socialized, they could be dangerous.
Having said this, they are the most beautiful dogs in the world. They are faster than greyhounds, agile enough to chase down jackrabbits, and really strong. But they have trouble being subordinate.
They cannot abide a kennel.
My first Ibizan was cast off when owner took her hubby's fortune and ran off to Chicago with her new "boy toy".
The dog languished miserably in the pound until I saw her picture in the local paper and went to get her.
9 years later I took her back to the pound for a "reunion" and my feaarless yet mild-mannered old gal acted like she was going insane.
She stood as far from me and near the door as she could with huge streams of slobbers running out of her mouth.
It was pure fear.
After all that time she had not forgotten the dreaded "jail".
I'd never seen her act that way before and never saw her do it again.
I think she truly believed I was "taking her back".

Her niece, now almost 3, exhibits the same the terror-drooling when faced with the prospect of a car ride.
She was traumitized by mishandling on a plane flight. [her crate was damaged and she was in shock when we picked her up]
They are the most independant, stubborn and delightfully devilish dogs I've had the honor of being owned by.
I cannot imagine a life without one, now that I've been ruined for "normal" dogs....:)

I was trying to explain why ""There is no such thing as "responsibly" breeding more dogs" is not a valid point. If said rhetoric were to be acted upon it would result in an outcome neither you or I want. I'm glad we agree on that.

Mine couldn't care less about cats, having been raised with one.
They don't even bother pet rats.
My bunnies have them completely buffaloed but the wild bunnies run and naturally, they give chase.
[and that's why I have a blackberry thicket in my yard...the birds and bunnies have a place to hide]
The dogs are *all* gentle.
They once had a good life but apparently things got -way- out of hand for this woman and now for the dog's own safety, they were taken away.
Mine are all fiercely protective of me but I suspect only one has the potential to actually bite.
She never has but she sure does a good job of convincing people that she *might*....;)
Mine are not 'subordidnate', in their minds.
They see me as their equal....LOL!

"Mommy" is the huggy lap cuddler.....:)
Grendel is a cousin of Bunny. But then there are so few, I suppose they're all cousins.

I don't know the kennel because I wasn't involved in the purchase. I believe it's in North Carolina.

I've heard people say it's easier to adopt a child than to "qualify" for an Ibizan.
The only reason I got my second one is that Minny, my first, was the sister of the breeder's own beloved dog.
She got her from Mary Ann Blair and Mary Ann was ecstatic that Minny [formerly "Marnie"] had been found and was worshipped that they naturally felt I was a safe bet for another one.
In 15 short years, I've owned 5 and "babysat" 3 for one-to-several years....:)

Hmmm....I'm not familiar with that one.
I know of 2 in VA, a couple in PA, one NY and another in CT.
Once there were 9 Ibizans in all of MD and I had 3 of them and friends had another 4 their friend had the other 2.
It turned out that my pound Ibizan was the daughter of the Balto stud and grandaughter of the local dam.
Small world.
That's just how few there are.
I would think that given the demand, there would be a line waiting for these dogs, if the word gets out. Hope it does.
I hope the pound can be talked into giving them a couple of weeks for the word to spread.
I would hope most of the fanciers and show people are also either on this email list or will hear about it through their channels.
I'd look up and see if there are sight-hound or Ibizan message boards that are popular and see if it's been posted there, also contact your kennels where you got your dogs, and any other dog show clubs you know of.
