BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.

After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.

Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.

wow...yeah sorry about that...

when you position the players as such and make it a blanket fine as you propose, the fans would only then face getting kicked out of the stadiums. It should be a case by case basis because this does not happen in baseball that much.

I agree, it doesn't happen that much. But professionals should be held to a higher standard. A 10k minimum would hurt Sheffield, but the mandatory banning of a fans from ballparks might have an effect on fans acting up. Especially if the "sport's centers" and such give coverage when a fan is suspended.

"I don't know what a 'cavones' is...but please, do tell. But I'm sure it's said with an accent."

It's preferably said wit a New Yawk accent...and...it means "pig" in Eye-talian..

Case and point: You see a man and woman dressed like slobs, bellies hangin' out, and cursing like a no-class SOBs. They are Exhibits "A" & "B" of "cavones," as in, "Aye-eee -- get a load of dose dere cavones."

"Well I don't get Yankee games, but I might just make arrangements to have them on my cable smarty pants!"

Just to bust my onions? (shirking away...)

I had NO idea Brewer Fans could be so vicious ;-)

I'm really starting to wonder if George is in a nursing home somewhere and nobody has broken the story yet.

George is laying low. He's actually trying to get Seinfeld to come back with another sitcom........ George as Bill Veck's dwarf.

Oh , I see. We have cavones here. Next time I see one I'm going to think to myself, "Look at that cavone."

Just to bust my onions? (shirking away...)

LOL! I never heard that one before. That must be like the term, "I'm just bustin' your chops." (Said in the Tony Soprano New Joysey accent.)

Yep. We're as mean as they come :)

IN TODAYS NY POST...

BOSTON LEGAL

By GEORGE KING

BALTIMORE — Gary Sheffield hasn't had much to smile about since late Thursday night when a Fenway Park fan hit the Yankees' All-Star right fielder in the face while Sheffield was tracking a ball near the fence.

But Sheffield was happy yesterday when informed by The Post that not only are the Boston police seeking a judge to sign an arrest warrant for Chris House, but the Red Sox are looking into revoking House's five tickets in the front of row of right field at Fenway.

"That's good," Sheffield told The Post. "You don't want that stuff happening."

When MLB disciplinarian Bob Watson turns in his report to commissioner Bud Selig next week, Sheffield isn't going to be suspended for his involvement that, according to Sheffield, didn't include him making contact with House after House's right arm connected with Sheffield's jaw. Sheffield could be fined for extending his arms toward House.

MLB head of security Kevin Hallinan is preparing another report and will turn it over to Selig possibly as early as tomorrow. Hallinan and an investigator from his office, George Hannah, met with Sheffield here Friday night. Hallinan and Hannah were not at Camden Yards yesterday. MLB obviously doesn't condone fans acting like House, but baseball is letting the Boston P.D. handle that end of the situation.

According to multiple sources, House and another Fenway patron are in a lot more trouble than Sheffield. Because what House did is a misdemeanor and wasn't witnessed live by a police officer, the Boston P.D. needs to appear before a magistrate and have him issue arrest warrants for House and the man who threw a beer at Sheffield.

With the use of high-definition television, the Boston P.D. came to the conclusion that House wasn't reaching for the ball that was hit by Jason Varitek.

"They have looked at it a long time, and thanks to HD, it's clear what the fan was up to," a source close to the Boston P.D. told The Post yesterday. "He wasn't going for the ball."

Continued here......

Good.

The fan in question is very lucky Sheffield decided to throw the ball back into the infield, which in turn gave the security guy time to get in between the two....

otherwise, it would have gotten much worse in a hurry. Sheff is a psycho.

A definite over reaction by the cops. The Sox front office is the appropriate response.

So we now can read minds.

If this goes to court, a waste of time except for the lawyers, House will argue that he changed his mind during the act of reaching for the ball and happened to bring his arm back up in a circular motion.

"He wasn't going for the ball."

If that really is true, that he was trying to hit Sheffield rather than going for the ball (which would have still been wrong) the fan is one stupid human being, and does deserve to lose his seats............unless he cleans up the stands and bathrooms after night games at least 200 times ;-)

Thanks for the update. I really want to see that jerk who threw the beer charged with something. It's clowns like that who are the posterchildren for aggressive fans (of any team).

Send a message to players and fine Sheffield. Don't just revoke this guys 5 tickets, BAN HIM FOR LIFE. I wonder if Sheffield will have to show up at the court hearing? the two thugs that attacked Ann Coulter got away with it because she did show up in court. But hey, shes just a minor celebrity and Sheffield is a superstar right? Both incidents were caught on tape.

Excellent.

And maybe this'll help clarify what actually happened for those Freepers with acutely severe eyesight problems.
