Tonight on 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney's monologue was on the coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II.
Rooney had newspapers from all over the globe strewn across his desk with essentially the same photograph of the Pontiff lying in state. He prattled on about the different angles of the pictures -- how some of them shot from the side, some from the bottom, how he only wore the red cape now that he had died, and was wearing brown shoes. He commented on how similar the Swiss language looked like German on the printed page. He mentioned how people who didn't share his beliefs were respectful to him nonetheless.
Then, Rooney does what Rooney does -- he put his foot in his mouth. I wasn't taping it, so I can't quote him verbatim, but he said something about how it's good that the story is winding down because people have had enough of it. And he added, 'At least this kept Terri Schiavo off the front page. We didn't need any more of that!'
I said, "Yeah, you jackass, the Pope knocked her off the front page. Sorry she couldn't die any sooner for you!"
He is, but he still won't STFU.
At least you have your final resting spot laid out.
Sounds like something i need to do. Can my death be a tax deduction, and can i do a "lay away " plan? :)
It all depends on the price of gas !!! ;-))
Agree only occasionally with Rooney ... on this one he's right.
LOL! I don't know. However, I am going into one of the flower beds on our land, just where my husband is. It is the site where his mother's house had stood before it burned to the ground. She died in that fire, so we determined that some of her ashes were there, too. So, we made a memorial garden there. We ended burying ashes of his nephew there before my husband died. When I die, the tins of ashes of our pets are going in the grave with our urn. Phillip wasn't too happy about that. I guess if I had died first he would have put them somewhere else. :)
How come? Because of the cremation cost? Yikes! I will have to cut costs somewhere else then. Phillip's cost around $2,000. I have the marker and the urn, now where can I cut some more of the cost out..........
Cheers!
Keep your toenails trimmed !!! ;-))
lol
What has that got to do with it? Or are you pulling my leg?
Well... I didn't have any further logical suggestion...
so I tried to insert a bit of humor...
sorry you didn't find it humorous !!! ;-))
He's gone from being an irrascible, lovable curmudgeon to a coarse and mean pathetic old fool.
I've never really cared for this grumpy ole fa*t!
Your words are much nicer than the ones I would choose to describe him. He reminds me of George Carlin in a way. They're both bitter in their old age even more so than they were in their youth.
Terri and the Pope ping! If anyone would like to be added to or removed from my Terri ping list, please let me know by FReepmail!
LOL! I did. I was just wondering if the funeral home would give me a pedicure before they cremated me. LOL!
I feel lost if I dont read the newspaper every morning.
I sit there all alone reading, drinking coffee and having opinions -- some of which I wouldnt dare tell you about because I dont want you to hate me.
I bought newspapers from around the world in a news store in New York this week. Most of them had pictures of Pope John Paul's body on Page One.
I dont know how people feel about seeing the pope's body. At most funerals in this country now, I think the casket is usually closed -- or not even there, sometimes.
I dont think people want anyone staring at them after theyve died. I dont. It's a great picture of the pope, though.
It's basically the same picture, but every paper used it differently. Some show the whole room. Some have close-ups of his face. They had it from a dozen different angles.
I saw that they only dress a pope in red after he dies.
They said they used a pair of brown shoes he liked.
This was a full page in the Paris paper, Le Figaro.
In Dublin, the Irish Independent used more of a close-up.
They called him John Paul The Great.
This Turkish newspaper, I think its Turkish, used pictures of him still alive. Same with this one from Madrid, Spain. I go along with that.
The Swiss paper, The New Zurich Zeitung, had it at the bottom of the page. Is Swiss different from German? Looks like German.
I dont even know where this paper's from. China, I guess ... and if you dont think it's getting to be a small world, look at the ad on the front page of a Chinese newspaper under the picture of a Polish pope in Rome, Italy. It's for a Mercedes Benz car made in Stuttgart, Germany.
People who aren't Catholic have been pretty good about honoring and respecting Pope John Paul. But, I think they probably had enough of this now.
One good thing, stories about Pope John Paul pushed Terri Schiavo off the front page. I mean, we didn't need any more of that.
Andy Rooney is one more reason why I have turned off the major news networks.
Catholic Ping - Please freepmail me if you want on/off this list
No wonder people confuse him with Andy Rooney... when you hear talk about someone named "Rooney" and then catch the word "ass" it's easy to get them mixed up.
Terri Ping!
