Lansing, MI - The slug bug community is in the midst of the biggest controversy the game has ever seen since the "no slug backs" rule was introduced in 1978. The issue? Whether to include the new Volkswagen Beetles as sluggable cars. Many players see this as an opportunity to introduce a whole new generation of 'Slug-Buggers' to the game, while others contend that the integrity of the game is at stake.
Purists of the game have argued since the new Beetle's introduction that the it should not be sluggable. We caught up with Jason Smithers at Slug-Bug-a-rama 2000. He said, "Those new cars shouldn't count. The game has been fine for over 20 years without them. Why change now?" He also questioned the new colors, "Those colors are a step too far. I mean 'Slug bug white' is fine but 'Slug bug vapor?' What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
Kyle Bessman, part of the game's new guard, has a different opinion, "It adds a whole new dimension to the game. Before we'd often go hours without seeing one, then one day Jimmy says 'Hey let's use the new ones'. Life has never been the same since then."
In August the Slug Bug Council is set to rule on the heated issue. Intense lobbying efforts on both sides have been in full force since January. Until their ruling the Council is telling participants to consider the new bugs sluggable on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and to exclude them on the rest of the days.
For those not familiar with the game, the rules are simple. The first person to see a Volkswagen Beetle announces "Slug Bug, no returns" while punching the other person. Variations on the game also include announcing the color, and two hits for a convertible.

You mean "punch buggy"?
I had no idea that you got two slugs for a convertible.
These days, I'd say you HAVE to include the new VW's; there just aren't enough old Beetles on the road anymore to make the game really painful--I mean really fun.
I loved it when I was a missionary in South America for two years. They were still making the old-style Beetles in Brazil and Mexico in the early 1990s (and perhaps they still are?), so they were all over the place. You could really rack up the Slug Bug points quickly.
I've played this game since I was little. I personally don't play the slug backs. Most people don't seem to have heard of two hits for a convertible, so I get to do lots of smacking on those. All three of my girls play it too...and yes, we play with the new ones.
I think so...I live in Texas, so we same to have a language of our own!!
Now thats funny. Does she get one in (or two??)
Is it wrong for me to want to drive by a volkswagen dealership?
I went to school in So Cal, as of 93 they were still manufacturing bigs, and many people I knew, (surf nutts, and tree huggers from UCLA) went to Mexico to buy cars, because they held up.
I had no idea what "Slug-backs" were when I first came home yesterday..aggrevated and determined to find a "Slug-Bug Manual" online. Can you use vehicles that are parked in parking lots, that you drive by?
And what about the bugs that are on service roads (feeder roads)??
My family plays all slug bugs...parked, service roads...just doesn't matter. If you see one, hit someone! LOL
We do 'slug bugs (no slug backs)' for Beetles and New Beetles. We also 'Cruiser bruiser (no bruise-backs)' for PT Cruisers.
.
Now thats a good one!!! may I use it???
LOL...I played this game as a kid but forgot about till recently when my grandson started playing it one day in the car. He has an added one that I thought very cool
PT Crusier Brusier:)
