So Your Computer is Running Slow
When you first bought your computer, it zinged. It was faster than the computer you replaced. It was "upgraded"! But lately something happened. It slowed to a crawl, taking forever to boot up and net surfing - especially for you dial-up users - became excruciatingly, impossibly slow. It is possible to recapture that lost speed.

What happened? There are a few culprits. We personally hate long winded explanations, so we will keep this short. Or, you can forget the explanations and just skip to the fixes. For those of you still with us, here are the three most common reasons your computer has slowed down. Two deal with slow internet browsing and one is what is causing your computer to take so long to boot up is causing your computer to run slow.

1). You have not cleared out your temporary internet files.
2). You are loaded up with programs in your start menu.
3). You are loaded up with spyware and need to clean it out.

Okay, follow us here and we will take you to the steps and the explanations. Those other guys that jumped ahead are at the same page. But you now know where you are headed.

DSL is the most secure high speed connection to the Internet you can have due to the point to point protocols it uses between the modem and DSLAM. Cable Internet doesn't provide such security(in most cases). Cable is more like shared Ethernet on a WAN scale.

DSL is also a dedicated service and will never slow down under normal operating conditions, and you will get what you are paying for every time you use it, unlike cable.

"DSL is too slow....I have Adelphia and they just increase download speed to 4 Mbps....course bandwidth tester ...just ran it... says I am only getting 2.0 Mbps..."

That's one of the problems with cable. Since the bandwidth is shared with your neighbors you will have fluctuations in speed. I don't like going onto the net to download a large file HOPING it will be as fast as I'm paying for.

My closest source for cable is Pampa TX routed to my small ville in the Panhandle. I think they use Hughes vs Cox ....

And besides if bad weather will knock the Sat Net out like it does Sat TV then screw that.... Good idea though !!....:o)

I think I'm gonna ask about local DSL, Cable and or Wireless in that order.....Sat Net will have to be a last resort for me !

What was the setup, add ons etc if ya have time ???....is it just a internal modem for yer desk top or was it an external modem that can wireless in your home for a LAN for the desk top and the laptop ??

The DSL modem(not really a modem but that's what people call them for some reason) is just a device that forwards your local traffic into the telco network over PPOE in most cases, to the Internet, and vice versa.

Behind your DSL 'modem' you can have a wireless router, or access point to provide access to other computers in your local network without having to run network cables. All you need is the wireless router and wireless adapters for any computer you want to have access.

It is my understanding (I read the FAQ)that Direcway internet service uses a special dish and so you would have a two-dish system to access DirectTV as well. And of course, as with our two TVs that we have hooked up to satellite (one dish), each must have it's own receiver, so you would end up purchasing the receiver for Direcway. Also, I would need to purchase some type of Ethernet card or adapter. And then they have to run an Ethernet cable, separate from my DirectTV cable. So yes, the equipment would be the same as far as I can tell. Plus the $59.99 fee/mo. vs. the $19.95 I am paying now. My DirectTV bill is $84 a month as it is.
