So Your Computer is Running Slow
When you first bought your computer, it zinged. It was faster than the computer you replaced. It was "upgraded"! But lately something happened. It slowed to a crawl, taking forever to boot up and net surfing - especially for you dial-up users - became excruciatingly, impossibly slow. It is possible to recapture that lost speed.
What happened? There are a few culprits. We personally hate long winded explanations, so we will keep this short. Or, you can forget the explanations and just skip to the fixes. For those of you still with us, here are the three most common reasons your computer has slowed down. Two deal with slow internet browsing and one is what is causing your computer to take so long to boot up is causing your computer to run slow.
1). You have not cleared out your temporary internet files.
2). You are loaded up with programs in your start menu.
3). You are loaded up with spyware and need to clean it out.
Okay, follow us here and we will take you to the steps and the explanations. Those other guys that jumped ahead are at the same page. But you now know where you are headed.
Simple magic. According to some of the gurus on here, very simple. But it works.
Maybe some on here will tell me there is a better way, but the best way I found to defragment is to run Windows defragmenter in Safe Mode.
Steps for defragmenting in Safe Mode (win 98)
1). Shut down computer.
2). Power up computer and immediately...
3). Press F8 key repeatedly (rapid keep pressing).
4). Select Safe mode and let computer boot up.
5). Click on START
6). Mouse over PROGRAMS
7). Mouse over ACCESSORIES
8). Mouse over SYSTEM TOOLS
9). Click on DISK DEFRAGMENTOR
Let it do its thing. Then shut down and start again.
Doing it from Safe Mode will keep it from restarting as different programs you have running in the background keep changing your disk information (everytime the disk information changes, defrag starts over).
And doing it is SAFE MODE and it defrags in a whole lot less time.
This will also speed your computer. For those of you that don't know what defragging is, as the computer stores and retrieves information from your hard drive, it gets a little messy (like my desk). All the papers are there but they get harder and harder to find.
When you defragment the information on your hard drive, your computer puts the information in places that it can get to them quickly. The faster it can find the information, the faster your computer runs.
The only difference between your computer cleaning things up and me cleaning up my desk is that the computer can find what it is looking for when it is done. Me, I can find a thing when my desk is clean.
Yea, but then you miss watching the defrag process. That's worth at least 20 minutes of fun watching the little squares change color and the blank spaces getting filled up.
Poor things. They think all this is necessary.
It is if you are running Win98
Yup. Every once in a while some winders bigot will roll out that "Linux is only free if your time is worth nothing" line. I point them to threads like these. My computer just works. I shouldn't have to waste my time babysitting the thing to keep it from getting spyware/worms/viruses.
Wow, great find. I've wanted something like this for years. Thanks much!
If you don't have a terrestrial wireless ISP in your area, try www.starband.com.
LMAO !.....
I meant to suggest the new WildBlue.com satellite Internet service. It should start operation in a few weeks.
Have a friend on wireless that is about 15 miles from town. The wireless transmitter is on a grain silo in a small farm town . My friend and his wife had to purchase some sort of antenna in line gizmo that boosted the signal and their wallets contents initially yet their internet is screamin fast !!
I'm trying to decide if I want cable broadband or wireless........pro's or cons of each is what I seek if anyone has time.
Stay safe !
Find again bump
Thank you all, the increase in speed when moving large image files is noticeable faster already.
I have dsl and love it, for what that's worth.
I can't give you anything technical...other than it doesn't go down...
So it works well....I live in a very samll town in the Panhandle, we have cable modems and wireless net but not sure about DSL.........will have to check that one too........:o)
Thanks Gramma !!
DSL is too slow....I have Adelphia and they just increase download speed to 4 Mbps....course bandwidth tester ...just ran it... says I am only getting 2.0 Mbps...
You owe me.
Never ever forget it.
