Time to leave the GOP?
1stfreedom

Posted on 03/31/2005 7:39:11 AM PST by 1stFreedom

For over a decade I’ve tried to convince people in the pro-life movement that leaving the Republican Party wasn’t a good move. The past few days has changed my mind, and I started to write this article when the news broke that Terri died.

Florida has shown us that the best that the GOP has to offer is a losing strategy.

For decades abortion has remained “legal” due to the same problems which were present in Florida: an arrogant judiciary and an unwilling executive branch.

The call for Jeb to refuse to enforce the illicit orders of Judge Greer went unheeded. As a direct result, Jeb’s actions sanctioned the starvation of Terri Schiavo. His Pontius Pilate approach to saving her life hasn’t fooled the pro-life base.

His public denial that there wasn’t anything more he could do was a slap in the face to the pro-life movement and to Terri’s parents. It is well known that he indeed had these ORDINARY powers as the Governor of the State of Florida.

If this is the strategy the GOP has to reign in the Judiciary, then it’s time to find another party. It is simply not acceptable that someone could be starved to death in the United States of America with “legal” sanction.

But where does one go? Many of the alternative parties are too idealistic or too focused on history to reach a broad spectrum of people. And some of the names are quite silly….

In my mind, an ideal third party candidate would appeal to socially conservative Republicans, Regan democrats, and minorities. A coalition party can indeed win…

What are your thoughts?

heh. I'm more than half convinced that all of these noobs that have been spaming every thread with anti-pubbie nonsense are just the same two or three 3rd party kooks who are always here causing problems.

I haven't heard a single person in the "real world" try to pin any blame on the Republicans in general or W and Jeb in particular.

Well, my thoughts are contrarian. I left the GOP way back when, due to being irritated with the liberalism and softness of George H.W. Bush. I explored both the Reform and Libertarian Parties. Then in 2000, I voted for W, all the way through. I rejoined the GOP. Why? Well, look at my tag line for the answer. We, the true, old time core of the GOP, need to take it back.

You are over reacting. That does not mean that you should not be concerned - you should, always.

Where do you suggest we go?

Before this time-to-leave drum beat starts tapping too loudly, folks should reflect on what happened to the Democratic Party when the moderates and conservatives fled.  Only now, there is no powerful, viable party to flee to, only contenders and pretenders.  What would it be like for conservatives to face two major liberal parties.  Too dreadful to contemplate.

Yeah, leave the major party that is closest to your beliefs so that you can join an inneffectual third party.

What happened in Florida was not a pro-life issue, it was a rule of law issue. If you think you can change the laws by aligning with useless third parties, you're out to lunch.

There must be a political price to pay for this or else the GOP won't have the guts to do the right thing. I say start a right to life party. For now we've got to vote for and with republicans to keep the more liberal, liberals, out of power. But let's put the fear of God into republicans. We put them in office and we can take them out.

It is getting to the point that these people on both sides are only interested in getting re-elected. It is a sorry state of affairs.

I agree. On some issues I wish the GOP get tough on i.e. the borders, however, I'm not going to waste my vote on a single issue. I tend to look at the big picture!

Start a new party... it's been proven time and time again that there is a huge underrepresented segment of the electorate just waiting to vote against the establishment if given a chance.

Other than Ross Perot, who gave us Bill Clinton, name one other time.
