Judge Greer and "Separation of Church and State"
29 March 2005 | James F. Rowland

"LET HER GO" I'm sure that you have heard that phrase spoken more than once, since the debate concerning the fate of Terri Schindler reached prominence recently.

One might well ask: "Let her go where?"

I find it particularly disturbing when I hear people in elected positions saying things which indicate that they are allowing a belief in a "hereafter" to influence their decisions.

Perhaps Judge Greer, who is reported to be a conservative, and Christian, Republican, has a belief in a future, better, life for Terri, and it is his desire to speed her on her way to his imagined utopia.

The atheists among us complain loudly whenever they perceive an attempt to breach the so-called "Separation of Church and State", but I've yet to hear any of them raise their voices in protest against the notion that Terri is going to a better place.

We are faced with an interesting situation, are we not?

It seems that many who call themselves "Christian" are totally unconcerned about the premature death of Terri, because they view her end here as the beginning of a much greater existence elsewhere.

I have faced much opposition from such folks in my efforts to raise an outcry in Terri's support. I've been accused of "carnal" thinking. Some have even told me that Terri died years ago and is already with God, and that we are only attempting to keep her corpse fresh.

I believe that this is a matter of considerable importance to those of us who would like to continue eating our pie right here, rather than punching out early in hopes of getting better fare at a Heavenly board.

I wonder if Terri would have done better had her judge been an atheist, with his hopes set on improving life on earth, rather than a man who may believe that Saint Peter has an urgent need for more harp players.

Maybe I should specify in my "living will", that I want a judge whose concern will be for the welfare of my body, rather than one who will be delighted to free my "soul".

I've heard more than one liberal invoke this thinking, even coming down hard on "those heartless conservatives" who would keep her back. Radio lib Ed Schultz is one. As if she could never go to heaven if she didn't die right this minute.

I have no confidence regarding Terri's ending here because so many questions seem to be up in the air here regarding her current and past condition and attempts at recovery.

The autopsy might put some of this to rest or create a whole new list of questions.

For me, Greer shows the need to reign in the judges of courts. Congress can do that and the people staying on the back on Congress when this is all done can bring this all about.

Any sane person would have visited her and asked if she wished to go on living. A simple blink could have established her true wishes.

I believe that Greer sees himself as a well meaning Christian who thinks he is showing the world how such a "man of God" should behave.

When this is over, his conscience won't bother him, and he will get congratulations from many religious folks.

I think there has been an established paper record.

The problem is the records in court are at odds with a number of witnesses that have been in public.

Seems this case is a mess. It's hard to know what the truth is because it is all over the board.

My guess is the official records have nothing contradicting that she has ZERO function.

The insurance companies are going to LOVE this case to deny future benefits to people.

Yes, it seems that the court has cooked the books and Terri's goose.

The court don't cook the books. The books had to be cooked when they were presented to the Judge.

Somehow, the opposition witnesses seem to be vacant from the papers the courts have, OR many experts have discounted the opinions that suggest Terri isn't a vegetable.

This is one very messed up case. That at least has been well established.
