Dr. Ruth on PBS Kid's "Read Between the Lions"
PBS | 3/28/2005 | unlearner (vanity)

Just caught a brief segment of a PBS kids show this morning called "Read Between the Lions". It is a show styled much like Sesame Street and promotes literacy and reading.

I do not watch much TV and do not know if this is typical of PBS kids programming, but thought it was worth passing along.

When I saw what appeared to be Dr. Ruth interacting with another character on the show, it got my attention. It sounded like her. Then the puppet character called her Dr. Ruth.

TOPICS: TV/Movies
KEYWORDS: children; drruth; pbs; sexeducation
I was shocked. Why would Dr. Ruth be a guest on a kids program? It makes no sense to me.

Anyway, I may not be able to respond to questions or comments until late today.

The idea of the libs promoting their sex agenda to little children is offensive beyond words to me.

That's her. She's called Dr. Ruth Wordheimer

Between the Lions is a pretty good show. It doesn't really do much social promotion like Sesame Street does now, it reminds me of the way SS used to be... promoting reading and education.

You haven't stated what she (her character) said.
And, if you didn't hear it, in all fairness you need to hold off on judgement.

This does not surprise me in the least. I could not swear to it, but I am pretty sure that this vile creature has also been on Sesame Street.

Dr. Ruth Wordheimer is a regular character. Between the Lions is great, IMO. My kids really learned a lot about reading from that show.

We watch it fairly often, and I don't remember ever seeing politics or anything like that making an appearance.

Maybe you all ought to do a little research before you get hysterical. Sheesh.

I don't want to appear paranoid, but I do believe that sexualization of children is on the Agenda of the Left.

Dr Ruth, on this show, may not do anything to promote this Agenda. But her mere presence is a way to open the door to later, more overt, efforts.

Her special field is making people feel good about sex. Her presence on a kids' show does not make sense.

NOthing she does on the show has anything to do with sex, and I don't think a child is going to know what her particular field is unless their parents tell them.

My kids think she is a funny little lady with a cute accent who knows cool stuff about words.

Sadly, I must concur.

The reasons they picked her, IMO, are

1) an inside joke for the adults (she makes adults comfortable about sex and she does the same for kids when it comes to reading); and
2) she has a distinctive voice that kids notice.

Kids have absolutely NO idea who she is unless their parents explain it to them.

Now, if you're saying that PBS is trying to get a generation to trust her with reading so that when they turn 14 they'll trust her about sex, it sounds a bit far-fetched, but who knows?

But I really feel that the PARENTS have more to do with that than a TV show that actually helps preschool kids learn how to sound out words.

JMO.

I've been reading Dr.Ruth's advice column on iVillage (not the most conservative place on the web...) and I think that she's not exactly the "free love" and "if it feels good, do it" advocate a lot of people think she is.

This is just an excerpt on what she had to say about Britney and her marriage exploits - very sound commentary in my opinion...

If Britney, or any celebrity, is going to accept the accolades and financial reward offered by having legions of adoring fans, then she also has to think twice about what messages she sends them. I hope that she is truly in love with this young man and that the marriage will last forever. But if I read in six months that they broke up, then I will be very sad; not for Britney but for all the young girls she will have had a negative influence on when it comes to the respect owed the institution of marriage.

Let me say that I'm looking at the worst possibility. Her presence may be harmless. I'm not trying to say that I have evidence of a conspiracy. But ..

If Bert and Ernie were used to teach HS kids about homosexuality, it wouldn't fly -- because HS kids would be insulted if anyone used a muppet to teach them anything. You can't go in that direction. But you can go in the other direction.

Dr Ruth is the funny lady who teaches you how to read. Isn't she sweet? Then, in Jr HS, the Health Class watches videotapes on Human Sexuality. And -- my goodness! -- there's that great lady again! And -- wouldn't you know it! -- she's a respected medical professional! Boy, I remember how much I enjoyed watching her! And, what's that? She says that homosexuality is a healthy way for boys to get closer to their camp counselor? I dunno and that ... but, she is a medical professional. And she was right about that "i before e" rule. Maybe I should listen ...
