All of us conservatives know the mainstream media is anti-conservative, anti-Republican and anti-Bush. They ridicule and oppose the pro-life movement. They make fun of Catholicism and Evangelicalism (and Mormonism and any Christian conservative denomination).
Why then are they giving the Terri Schiavo situation this extensive coverage? One cannot watch the news on any TV channel or read any newspaper without the Terri Schiavo case as one of the leading stories.
We've learned several things over the past few weeks:
1. President Bush's approval ratings have PLUMMETED since he got involved.
2. Anywhere from 2/3 to 4/5th of those surveyed believe the GOP-led congress and President Bush SHOULDN'T have poked their collective noses into the case.
3. Many of those who want Terri's feeding tube reinserted have vowed to punish the Republicans for not doing enough.
What these mean is there's a direct negative causal effect against President Bush and the Republicans.
This is why the MSM is covering the Terri Schiavo case - they know it's a 'lose-lose' situation for President Bush and the GOP. The longer they play it; the more damage is done to the Republicans.
The leftists and liberal Democrats couldn't be happier. This single case has turned their fortunes around and instead of losing more congressional seats in 2006; they now stand to gain a significant amount - perhaps even retake control over congress.
Why? Because the GOP will lose support from moderates and independents for their 'interference' and will also lose support from those who will want to punish them for not doing enough to keep Terri alive.
So, way to go Republicans! You've now given the Democrats control over the US just because you let your emotions be manipulated without thinking of the consequences.
It's the ultimate reality TV...someone will die at the end.
This Shiavo saga has the elements of a soap opera as well as a car crash. It appeals to sheeple on many levels.
It hardens attitudes and divides the population. It serves as a distraction for a number of other issues such as Darfor (where 100's of people are starving) and this weeks latest UN power grab.
This is yellow journalism at its finest.
I'm not optimistic about assisted suicide being defeated in Florida if it were put to a vote via referendum.
Actually, that is only true because they put their noses into the mess. All they had to do was say, "We Republicans respect the rule of law and defer to those who have first hand knowledge of Terri's condition" or "We don't have first-hand knowledge of this case to comment" or even a callous "Terri who?" would've been vastly better than issuing demands without obtaining ALL the facts.
Jumping in and passing motions to restore Terri's feeding tube based on an amazing diagnosis by observing video snippets of a few minutes instead of the conclusions of the experts who've spent months and years examining her was about the stupidest thing they, or anyone else could do for that matter.
I'll third, or fourth that.
The bogus polls, even if they were valid polls, wouldn't change the President's actions, or words.
In the long run, the people of this country prefer a man of convictions in the Oval Office, and we have one.
The people who say they will 'punish' the Republicans either for standing up for life, or on the other end of the spectrum, not breaking the law to save a life, are not likely Republicans at all.
There is enormous frustration that Terri can be legally murdered by a culture of death judge, and I am praying that God will use this to wake people up spiritually, and to also turn this leftist judicial usurpation of the power of the American people around.
I'm also praying for dear Terri, as I have rarely in my life prayed before....

your analysis is based on flawed polling. Your argument is pathetic. First of all today's USA Today Poll that shows Bush's JA @ 45% has a sample of 37% Democrats and 32% Republicans. So this is obviously a slanted poll. Terrance and Rasmussen who were the most accurate in the 2004 election have Bush @ 53%. And besides who cares. If this is such an unpopular position for the President to take then why aren't the Main stream Dems opining on this subject? Because everyone knows life is the way to go!
I don't know, the polls may not accurately predict the future in this. I have a feeling that people will appreciate the different paths taken by the Left and the Right.

You know, we heard that very same thing when the Republicans fought to keep Elian Gonzalez from going back to his real daddy, Fidel Castro. Let's see what happened since then, shall we? Bush wins two elections and Republicans control the House and the Senate.

Conclusion: You are smarter than the entire GOP [very conceivable] OR [and more likely] the POTUS got involved because HE BELIEVES that this case was so convoluted that our CULTURE should err on the SIDE OF LIFE and he is NOT POLL DRIVEN, HE IS A LEADER.
As for the INEPT GOP Congress, well it is about time they tried to reign in the courts. Problem is the COURTS are OUT OF CONTROL and THIS TRAGIC case has MADE that a startk reality.
There are THREE Branches of Government, they USE to BE, separate and EQUAL. They are no longer equal, the JUDICIARY now RULES this nation!! If you did NOT believe it before this case, YOU MOST certainly must believe it NOW. The POTUS, the US Congress and the Florida Executive and Legislative branches have been completely neutered by the State and Federal Judiciary.

Nonsense. We are a year and a half from the next election. Not one voter in 50 will even remember this, much less have their vote swayed by it.
The Governor of Florida is being blamed for all happening in Florida right now - he has done everything but send in state troopers. I am totally against that. We are not a police state.
What are the police for? I mean, literally. This is what I asked before. Preventing innocent people from being killed is just about the most basic function that justifies the existence of government at all. What good is a government that not only fails to prevent it, but actively participates?
President Bush signed a bill at 2:00 am cutting a vaction short... The Republican party as gone above and beyond. The democrats/media are on the other side throwing everything they got at the public. What LEGAL remedies did the Republicans cave on?
You assume that the courts have absolute power. Thus, you admit defeat before you start. Admit it -- deep down, you really believe that 'living document' crap; that men become gods when they put on black robes, and that the laws mean whatever they say. You'd put Dred Scott in chains.
Posturing about working "within the law" is absurd when the judiciary is allowed to simply cancel any laws they don't like, and make up their own. It's an oligarchy, not a republic. And you are gladly bowing down before the Constitution's domestic enemies.
We are a nation based on the rule of law. Don't like the laws vote out the politicians who make the laws.
Pointless, when the legislature has had its lawmaking power cancelled by the courts. Why would one impotent legislator be better than another?

When has there ever been a school shooting with so many dead and so little national TV coverage during the week?
The gun in question belong to a law enforcement officer, negating the “too many guns in the hands of civilians” argument.
The school security guard was unarmed by law, negating the “more laws will save the children” argument.
The media looked at the children’s corpses and realized sadly that they could not exploit them for political grandstanding and walked away from the story.
My disgust is aimed at the running the country by judiciary, the fact that judges are liberal Clinton nominees, and the stalling by the DEMOCRATS over our President's judicial nominations.
The liberals know what the Schiavo case is really about...it's the wresting of power from the executive & legislative branches of government. They are flexing their "judge" muscles.
Come on people, direct the angst against the right demon.
