This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well it was a good horse dream. Most aren't. I woke up chuckling

Seems like the pasture is all weeds, but it's lush with them. I think we should put them in at night, just to get them off of it for 10-12 hours and eating some bland hay. We'll have another month or more of this lush stuff before it starts to dry out and then turns to dust by July.
When I check next time I'll feel for the pulse. Pony's feet were actually cooler than the others.
Any validity in this idea that I have that their feet will get hot?

At least you know where some of it came from. I wake up sometimes and haven't a clue where my mind came up with that stuff! My dreams sometimes don't make a lick of sense, more like hallucinatory flashing images that aren't related to each other.
Looking at George cross-eyed will make him founder.
Seriously, there are lots of reasons for founder to happen; horse drinking too much cold water when he's hot and sweaty, green grass, feed overload, road founder, the list goes on and on. Ponies are definitely the most suseptable but horses with a cresty neck are also big culprits.
Hair, it sure couldn't hurt anything to get them off the grass for a few hours a day. Yes, when they are fixing to founder their feet will be warm but George's are always warm so it's hard for me to tell if they are warmer than usual.
And they can founder if they are sick with fever... something to be aware of.
I know ponies are susceptible, and Bay is a little cresty, so I think bringing them in at night and feeding them hay in the stall before turnout is good. Let them fill up on bland stuff so they are at least full and grazing slower when they do go out.
We have been feeling both of their feet for hotness. I didn't know about the pulse though.
I just never know how careful to be, because I've never had one founder. I've known there was potentially too much grass, I've limited them when it's particularly lush, and so far so good. What I don't know is how much is too much. It's sortof like running your car on empty. You never ~really~ know how far down the needle will go until you actually run out. And you never want to actually run out.

So true. I don't think you can be too careful although I've never had a horse that wasn't a pony founder. Tuffy sure could, he's fat and cresty. He's also in the barn right now because of his allergies. They've suddenly kicked up on him and he does much better in the barn. He's gonna need some prednisone come Monday morning when the vet opens.
Well your pony isn't really a "pony" but more like a small horse. Maybe she isn't at as much a risk.

Huh. Your right. I was reading in my raising horses book and it says don't allow to overeat on lush pastures but what is overeat? It's not like you can wait til they get sick and then back them off.
We've never been able to figure that out. Originally we thought is was flies or gnats but I have a heavy mask on him, even the ears are lined, a fly collar and a bunch of fly products on his face and he's still friggin' scratching his ears. I need to take him to Texas A & M but it's hours away and I just don't have time. Prednisone works for a couple of months but that's not a cure. (it can also cause founder, of course) I've tried antihistamines but so far, no luck. I've had some luck with blue/green algae so I'll start him back on that tomorrow and see what happens.

It's worse in spring and summer but it does bother him some in the colder months. If I keep masks on him during the winter, he's fine. Hasn't been good enough for summer.
I don't think it's the products I'm using but I'm not sure. I've tried so many different things and nothing has worked a hundred percent, except the steroid. What needs to be done is the allergy testing like they do on people. Inject different substances under the skin and see what happens. He'd have to go to A & M for that.
I guess this is the night for huhs:') could he be allegic to the mask? I've seen you post about A/M before. Are they open for the public or does your vet refer? One of the foals here sent there. The kid said it was expensive. I'm not so fed up that I'm thinking of taking mine there:') Just curious.
Oh, never mind about the mask. I see you say it helps.
I don't think it's the mask since he wears it year round and no problems in winter.
Anyone can go to A & M but it's usually reserved for the cases that no one else can figure out. I would imagine it's very expensive but I don't know anyone who has ever taken a problem horse there. I do have one friend that donated a filly that developed some weirdo disease that horses don't get. It wasn't curable so she donated her to the school. They were happy to get her, for research.
I'm hittin' the sack, ladies, right after I wash all this horse poop and bedding off of me. I was spreading it with a spreader and it was really windy today.
