This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I had a blast singing it on karaoke night last Friday at the local bowling alley.
Looks like we are finally going to get a warm spell. I going to ride Rusty and Harley today, and Rocky and Harley tomorrow, and so on and so forth:)

Well, luck wasn't with me. Bluebell isn't bred. Darn! I don't know what happened. I had her ultrasounded a month after breeding and she was bred, but I didn't repeat the ultrasound at 45 days to make sure it implanted. I'm almost sure she was bred back in the winter. The vet said she may have re-absorbed it.
Anyways, it's a pain in the butt. I've got to get back with the breeder and start all over again. I had her ultrasounded yesterday to see where she was in her cycle and he said she'd probably ovulate in about 10 days and to take her to the breeder in about 7 days.
I'm not going to breed Truly on her foal heat this time coz I don't want a March foal, the weather's just too unpredictable in March. So I'll probably take her back next month to the same stallion I bred her to last year. Maybe between the two of them I can at least get one foal a year!
We've got clear and dry this morning.... Horses got to stay out last night, no rescue needed at 3 am. I should mow canary grass in the pasture, but we'll likely have showers in the afternoon if the forecast is right.
Dang, I feel so bad for you and your horses. Strangles is a very nasty disease. It is going to have to run its course. All you can do now is medicate, make her as comfortable as possible, and wait. What a shame. Didn't you have SL vaccinated when Okie got sick?
G'morning Sharn! I've been catching up from last night and came across your posts about the water coming from Misty's nose and mouth. I have seen this before and it's usually caused by eating clover in the spring. I don't know why it does it, but it does. It makes them slobber really bad. Sometimes they'll just open their mouth and it seems like a whole quart of water will just pour out. It scared me to death the first time I saw it. I thought the horse had thrown up! It may make their nose do the same thing. It's nothing serious and hopefully this is all it is.
I've never worn a vest, but they're not a bad idea. You can tell anybody who makes fun of you to kiss your butt! ;o)
I sometimes catch a rash of crap about my helmet, but I always say Better Safe Than Sorry.
Well maybe that is it because I have just come in from spending the morning with her, no problems at all, not even a drop has come from her nose, no cough, nothing and she is eating her feed and hay as normal.
I was so worried last night, and what with the vet not even returning my calls and deaconjim not being here, i was so afraid that she would choke. I am still watching her closely and will go check for clover in their field.
BTW when we went to get fresh hay this morning from our local farmer, he said that he was nearly out because he has had to ship so much down to Florida cause the grass hasent grown there yet! Thabkfully we got 10 bales so it should last us until ours really gets growing. We have two pastures that are not being used at the moment to allow them to have a head start.
So sorry to hear that your mare isnt with foal Becky, that must be such a disapointment. Hopefully next time she will take and hold on to it.

After the unsuccessful attempt to get my gray mare bred yesterday am waiting on a call from the studhorse man, he is trying to get somebody to come and help him, they will twitch her.
This may not happen. :(
The man who owns the study is elderly, a real old-fashioned cowboy/horseman, quiet spoken, a nice man.
So glad to hear your mare seems better.
I'm so sorry. I guess there is no way of knowing why?

Oh, another nice thing, the little filly's got the scours. I gave her Pro-bios on the 1st and 3rd days and I meant to on the 7th but I forgot. :o( I said something about it to the vet yesterday when I took Bluebell and he gave me a tube of Dia-sanyl and told me to give her 10g every 12 hours and continue with the Pro-bios every other day. I sure am glad I spent plenty of time working with her mouth when I was imprinting her coz she takes it better than most grown horses. :o)
Frog's is the mare not in foal. I think mine still is, but not sure if I had dates wrong or something.

She's probably just not fully in season yet. Both my mares will kick a stud's brains out if you try to breed them when they're not ready, even though they have breeding hobbles on. But when they're finally ready, they'll stand there like a statue.
I can't believe this guy doesn't use them. Every stud owner I've ever dealt with uses them, even if the mare appears ready to stand. They can change their mind at the last minute and lash out. They don't hurt the mare at all either, they're just a safety thing.
Apparently not. It's just one of those things that happens sometimes when you're raising horses. I talked to the stallion's owner this morning and I'm all set to take her back to be bred on the 9th.
I'm hoping you find out today what the problem is with Misty. I'm angry at your vet for not calling you. I hope he has a really good reason.
