This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, let's hope we're both worrying about nothing.
I'm thinking that palominos especially get "protein" spots. At least I think that's what they are called. They develop dark spots when they are very healthy. Appaloosa spots would be lighter than his base coat color, not darker unless they were on a white blanket. Then they might be a couple of shades darker than the base coat.

Don't worry - wait until you talk to your vet. Then I'll run by some options for you if necessary.
hope Bluebell is too..........Misty didnt look pregnant anywhere near like Sugar did, She is a much bigger horse, much longer in the back too, I would have bet $100s that Sugar would have foaled first, but Misty was a whole month ahead and Adge was a solid rounded colt. Misty bagged up from nothing to everything and 12-24 hours later had him! (she was dripping milk!). Sugar bagged up weeks before she had Thunder. It was within 12 hours after she waxed up though.

Bend Or Spots Dark Bend Or Spots ©Equine Color Bend Or spots (also called Ben d'Or, Smuts or Grease Spots). are small to large spots of color that range from a couple of shades darker than the base coat to very dark, almost black. They're most commonly seen on Chestnuts and Palominos but also occur on darker colors, they're just harder to see. These are randomly distributed on a horse. These may not be present at birth, some horses may not get them until they are a few years old and some horses may not get them for several years. The genetic control of Bend Or spots isn't known, more than likely they're a dominant trait.
Is Belle a "nutty" horse? And I'm using nutty as a catch all term here. Has she lost a foal before?
hi, I just went outside to take some pics of the colts as they are changing color. I noticed Misty had her head up really high and fluid all over the ground. She is losing pools of gunk from her nose, whenever she puts it low. She isn't eating or anything. She was ok this morning and finished her feed.........should I call a vet, or I know this sounds stupid, but do horses get common colds? I have a taken a pic of her with head up that I can post........

Define pools. Horses get colds but that generally doesn't involve enough drainage to hit the ground. From what you are describing, it doesn't sound like a cold.
Panic over I think.....Emma said she had been drinking not long before I got there and the chased a chicken away from her feed, when I went back out after posting I had only got 1/2 way across the field when she sneezed LOUDLY! She is now eating, drainage has stopped and she seems happy! I will keep an eye on her, but I believe she may have had a nose full of feathers!
They do get colds and flus... and a snotty nose does mean infection of some kind. Have they been vaccinated for the common viruses, rhino/flu/?
I wouldn't ignore it... I'd call and ask the vet.
Mine have had an occasional cough... commonly at the first start of work, like a clearing of the airways... I saw gunk come out of Cyn at one of these coughs. I attributed it to dust in their bedding and hay as we got down to the end of the old hay. It's hard to tell sometimes, who coughed, but think I've heard it from both Bay and Cyn.
But a runny nose, if it had any color other than clear, I'd be concerned about.
she had a very dusty dirty nose, which alarmed me, but the pools were clear. There is one in the second picture behind Mistys head....
Nutty horse is describing her mildly:) She has a problem that I have never quite figured out what it is, but I believe it's either she has some kind of damage in her back/neck, or a deep seat fear of something that sends her into a panic. What ever causes it it is almost as if she has seizures. She has fell over with me 2-3 times, and then other times when I wasn't on her but had just finished saddleing. I do not believe it is because she is a rank horse. Something causes these spells other then her just being bad. I just have never been able to track down the problem. But she did NOT pass is on to her foal, thank heavens. She was broke in pretty roughly, I think that is were the problem originated.
Yes, she did loose a foal 3 years ago.

If they get into dust they'll snort and blow, but dropping pools like that is ~kindof~ alarming... You shouldn't see that, and you shouldn't see more than occasional occurance of the white discharge that I think I see in Adge in the same picture.
Have they had all their shots? Have you heard any coughing?
If I could comment on Misty, she's a little down in weight. We haven't seen a whole body shot, but she's got visible ribs and a bony rear end. I'd up her groceries. The foals are about to weaning age... What's their schedule for weaning and gelding?
The foals are looking great, BTW.
Grease spots is almost what it looks like on his hips.
