This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Sounds to me she just got a snoot full of something that irritated her nose till she got it all sneezed out:)
Horses can have allergies to things.

Adge was born on 26th December and thunder was born I think on the 30th Jan. So only 4 months and 3 months. Misty never put on a lot of weight whilst pregnant and lost it all straight away after foaling. She is having all that she is supposed to have as a nursing mare plus extra.
We have already discussed and decided how to wean them, we have an empty field (not adjoining the colts) that we can put the mares in. We think that leaving the colts in the field that they are used to would be less traumatic for them. We would like to wean them together but I am concerned for Misty. Adge has been seperated for over an hour recently when we have worked with him and he did not seem to be overlly concerned. I know it varies from owner to owner when to wean.........what do you think?
That is what I am hoping! I am checking on her every 30 mins though just to be sure........
It's too soon to wean them. The youngest should be at least 5 months.
Just keep feeding the moms well... there are supplements you can add if they keep dropping... and give as much hay as they want.
The short term separations are good, they can help regulate and know exactly how much each horse is eating and ensure Misty is actually getting what you are feeding her.
Trust me, Misty gets all that she wants! She is the dominant horse and if she wants the colts or Sugars, by God she will go get it! Maybe we should wait on the weaning till Thunder is 5 months, which means 2 months still to go. I will speak to the vet and see if he can't suggest something. I am going to get a full body pic of her now, see u in a bit.

I've weaned babies as early as 3 months, it's not ideal but can be done.
From what I have read mares milk does not really have alot of nutrition after 3 months, so I think weaning at 4 months would be OK especially if the foal is eating good.
If I had a mare that was having trouble keeping weight on, I'd wean as soon as I could. They can loose so quick, and it's really hard to get it back on.
JMO:)
Becky
Oh cool. :) They look like they will last for awhile.
Well Adge has just started his 5th month. Misty PUT ON weight after we changed feeds, is still getting plenty but has lost some weight again. Can I have everyones opinion on what THEY would do? Thunder is a lot smaller colt, so I wouldnt even begin to wean him till his 5th month, but Adge is so much bigger and stronger looking.
Let me go out and take a pic.........pics say more than a thousand words...........now where have I heard that one???? : D
Remember to drop moms' feed for a few days to start to dry them up and then increase it to get them back to the right weight after they dry up.
Well, it was a bust.
She was very much in heat but wouldn't have anything to do with the stallion --- lashed out at him. Dang!
Oh, I'm sorry.
Duchess may be able to give better advise then I, but I think sometimes mares have to be hobbled. Headaches you know:)
Becky
We'll try again tomorrow morning. The studhorse man said he thinks he can have somebody there to help him twitch her. He didn't want me to help, I'm too small.
He said he doesn't like to use hobbles. So have my fingers crossed for tomorrow a.m.
She looks pretty good in that picture.. She's just a little thin, but not alarmingly so. Any nasal discharge on the others? Did I see it in Adge or is he dry?
No nasal discharge on the others, I am concerned though, I cam looking out from my balcony at least 300 feet away and I can see her pooling. So much fluid loss cannot be good.
I just wish my vet would hurry up and get back to me!
I havent seperated the horses, I cannot really easily do that alone as i can't move the panels or even do the hinges with one good arm, and Emma is too small to help.
It's already 8pm here and will be getting dark soon : (
Is she not able to hang out near him for awhile? I'd think if you just unload her walk her over to the stud there may always be too much surprise and excitement for her to stand quiet.
Is she a maiden mare or has she been bred before?
Dang... I don't know what it is, but it ain't normal. When she's dripping, is it both nostrils or just one?
Both nostrils and sometimes out of her mouth if its open. It has stopped again, but I am concerned. I thought maybe she had got something up her nose the first time, but it looks more than that. The discharge is kind of clear/white so I just don't know. vet still hasnt called, I might get deaconjim to try, male voice and the rest!
