The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, may be she's going to run late this time, and maybe is carrying a colt.

Duchess, you're a Saint! But they're really nice looking horses. God works in mysterious ways!

Well, I tried to just close the door again, but they were already getting up. Cyn was out of water and went out and had a big drink, so I was right. I can't imagine eating a dry cob and hay breakfast without ~something~ to drink with it.

Oh so do I. Bob really is taken with her, as is my son - they were going through the Appaloosa Journal last night trying to decide what halter stallion to take her to next year for breeding. :) I guess what will be will be, huh?

There very nice looking horses. If your son starts to ride again, I'd say money well spent:)

That's what Bob said. And my son is really taken with Bart. He was out grooming him last night and is already planning on how he's going to get him in shape for halter and western pleasure on June 25th.

Oh well, what's a few more mouths to feed. I hope the mare is N/N. Can you tell, or do you know if she has ever had foals?

We are sending in Biscuit's test, keeping our fingers crossed. Her dam was postive on one.

Same as you did before, they are just really LOOOOOOOONG. To make sure you get all of it, right click it, choose 'select all' and then 'copy'.

momma, I cant believe you were told you were getting a 2 year old horse and she turned out to be 30!! The things we horseowners learn. (First on the list, never trust what a horsetrader says ;) but I digress.)

30 is ancient for any horse. You have absolutely nothing to regret, other than the fact that she's passed on. But at 30 it sounds like you gave her a wonderful life for the time she was with you. You didnt "save" her to prolong her pain, you saved her so she could go with love, respect and dignity. My God, what greater gift! Mourn your loss but never blame yourself for lovin' her up as you did.

As humans that is our only job. It makes everything else possible.

Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. No, the mare has never been bred before. I'll have to get her papers straightened out, because she's never been registered either, although I have all the paperwork for it.

Well I hope so:)

I'm wondering if I could possibly have wrote her breeding dates down wrong. I know for me to figure her due dates, which I did at the time I bred her, I had a calender in front of me. I cann't imagine being off.

That reminds me... that we have to move Cyn's registration over to us before it gets lost and forgotten.

Hmm.. No, I doubt that you made a mistake if you had the calander in front of you. Are you going to have the vet out?

I have a call in now to the vet. She will call back sometime today. If she thinks the mare needs to be checked again, I'll take her in.

I did just read on a site that some mares don't bag till a few days before delivering. I just can't fine where they will be several weeks out bagging one time and days out the next.

Her papers are in the file drawer about a 1/3 of the way back if you want to dig for them.

momma, I cant believe you were told you were getting a 2 year old horse and she turned out to be 30!!

LOL. Thanks for the smile you brought to my face AND heart!!!

Here's WHY she got judged as a 2 y.o..........(It wasn't because of a horse trader. She was ALREADY mine before they 'aged' her.)

When she was getting moved from the kill pen to our pen, she was in the cross-gates...going berzerk. An old-timer looked at her teeth, to age her @ 2 y.o., WHILE she was going wacky. THE SIDE he was able to see was 'baby smooth'. The OTHER side showed a more 'accurate' age for her.

The Galvayne's(sp) groove appears at a certain age at the TOP of the 'dog teeth'. When they get old, the groove disappears from the top, and looks like it's coming from the BOTTOM of the teeth.

She also had OTHER markers of old age, 'cusps', but don't ask me to 'splain that, cuz I can't. LOL.
