This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
LOL! Yeah, you had to be there.
LOL! We were talking about ways to get your horse to raise, or at least not clamp their tail down on a thermometer.
Good morning, Becky, Hair;
Yes, Colonel Freckles was (maybe is?) national champion cutting horse, QH.
No, I am not going to watch! I'll just hand her over to the studhorse man. I'll be checking in to FR today, lots to do, will take her about four o'clock central time and tonight or tomorrow morning I will report back. She's been acting like a waterfront chippie, showing out to the neighbor's geldings, so I hope it's the right time.
Well, I'm just going to see what she says. I think she is pregnant, I'm just wondering why she hasn't bagged, how normal that is?
Becky
And no, she's not going to stay there. I would have preferred it, but I am taking her in the trailer and bringing her home after the event. What I hope is the event. I took her Saturday and she about killed the stallion, absolutely refused him. The studhorse man said wait a few more days.
The man and his wife had three horses, an appaloosa mare and two old geldings. They were trying to sell them so that they would be free to do some traveling, especially to CA where the man's elderly mother lived. Well, I took their home number and called the wife to find out about the mare. It turned out the mare's breeding includes Impressive and I want nothing to do with Impressive bred horses - HYPP you know. I told Bob and he called the man back that evening and told him thanks for thinking of us but we would pass due to the mares breeding.
On Friday, my son went into where the guy works and saw the flyer on the mare. He talked to my daughter-in-law and found out that we had passed due to the breeding. He thought about it all night, called us at the crack of dawn Saturday and told Bob, you have to go see this mare at least - and preceeded to describe her to Bob. Bob called the man, said I'm coming out with the trailer, I'm buying the mare (as I'm sitting across the table from him with my mouth wide open). Then he says, church is still out on the two geldings (I said we don't need two old geldings, 24 and 25 for heaven's sake) and we'll be out in an hour.
My son and daughter-in-law met us and followed us out. I have to add here, my son has always wanted a palomino and has promised my daughter-in-law that he'll start riding again when he gets one. I thought he said that because he really doesn't want to ride any longer and knew she couldn't afford a palomino.
Anyway, we get there, Bob falls in love with the mare, my son sees the palomino and again, it's love at first sight. Well, **ll, can't leave the other guy there by himself, they've all been together for 12years. As I'm inside talking to the wife and getting all the paperwork, I find out she's 1) a minister and 2) has been praying for a miracle - she wanted all her babies to go together to a good home where they would stay. Anyway, I wrote her a check, asked her to give me a day to cover it, we took the horses home (It took two trailers the guys are all so big) and they followed us out to see them settled. Really, all I need now is a miracle to pay for them and buy feed :)
How far ahead did she bag up last time she foaled?
Good luck today :)
Heh.... sounds like a situation very much out of your control ;~D but I've got a soft spot for a story with a happy ending. I won't even ask what you intend to do next, but I hope the two older gentlemen find a niche where they're welcome to live out their days. Can't the mare be tested for HYPP? Is being negative insurance that she won't pass on any HYPP genes? Or does it only apply to her coming down with it herself?
Funny how that works. One day they want nothing to do with the stud, the very next day they love him:)
I just put Belle in the small pasture I have behind the house, not much there, but I figure she gets tired of being in that run, especially when the other horses get to get out once in a while.
There;s a little back there for her to pick at. I put her there for a few hours yesterday too. The funny thing is Rocky, he just goes nuts. I guess because he can't see her. Yesterday he was turned out on his pasturea area, and he ran around squalling till he was all sweaty, it was funny. I left him in his run today, it's fun to watch him run around crazy, but it makes me nervouse when he's running at a fence line and does a sliding stop right at the last second. I'm always afraid he'll slide right thru. He can't get going so fast in his run. He's out there hollering at her tho now.
I had Rusty and Harley turned out in their "pastures" yesterday at the same time. Rusty's in the front yard, and Harley's is behind the barn connected to the arena. They were running around as fast as they could too. Rusty especially. I was watching his back leg too, and it didn't seem to have a problem at all, and he was really moving and stopping hard. I've got grass cut up all over where he was slide stopping. One time he made the prettiest jump over a puddle that was in my driveway:)
Belle...she could have cared less, she was busy trying to find something to graze one:)
Becky
So all you have to do is more the mare and the rest of them exercise themselves!
Err... ~move~ the mare.
29 days.
Becky
Pretty much. I didn't feel so guilty yesterday after that for not exercising at least one of them:)
Becky
I went out to put ours out... I was concerned that they didn't have full water buckets in the stalls when I put them in at 3 am, so after all that breakfast, I needed to get them out of there. They were all laying down when I opened the door, then I felt bad for disrupting them just to push them out into the rain. Very rude.
Well, my son will ride Bart and wants to show him. I'll have UCDavis test the mare and if she's negative, then she won't get it and it will be okay to breed her as long as she's not bred to an HYPP horse. And Rim, well, guess my grandson and I can ride him :)
Oh - this happened Saturday night and Sunday, not Friday night and Saturday - see how stressed I am.
LOL:)
I feel so silly when I feel bad when I go out to get one to ride and I have to get them up:) It seems they lay down so seldom, I figure they're really cussing me when I get them up to go ride.
Becky
Well, I hope she's negative, she's certainly a strong-built loudly colored mare.
