*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh. If you had mentioned it before, I'm sorry for asking again. :-) Been thinking about Mommado. I hope that everything is ok.

Me too. It just breaks your heart when they are down. When Okie couldn't get up I thought he was dieing. If I had had to, just like mommado I would have treated him there and hauled buckets of water out and cooled him down in the pasture but he finally got to his feet.. It was so hard for him but as sick as he was he still accepted he had to get up because I was telling him to. He struggled and struggled but he did it. I could not have been more proud of him than if he had won that fancy horse race yall talk about:'). I guess we were both running on adrenaline though because the next morning I could hardly move my shoulder but at the time I didn't realize how much I was pulling and I don't know if he could have done it if he had gone much longer. They get sick so fast.

Oh and the funny thing was that all those geldings I was telling you about just stood there out of my space and watched and followed us to the gate at a respectful distance.

I have to ask for everyone's 'tolerance' with what I write. I probably won't make much sense. heh....my eyes are so puffy/swollen, that I can barely see the keys/screen. And, I kNOW I look like a big-tine druggie.

I went back out after I wrote last night. Her legs were OK, no swelling/no 'breaks'/no hot spots/no tender spots. I checked her eyes. BOTH were clear/repsonsive. I checked her gums...they were pink and 'filling' good. She ate/drank everything we put in front of her.

We tried for a couple hours to 'pull' her out. When she shredded my hands/back, I quit and came home. Markie drove me back, and was heading BACK with Twister's Weather-beeta blankie and warm sugar water for her. On her wasy back, she hit a water fall and wiped out. WRECKED the car, and messed up her forehead/knee.

Meanwhile, hubby and the guys managed to get Twister pulled out and up on dry land. They left her with grain, hay, fresh grass. And came on to attend to Markie's injuries/car.

Hubby and I went out this a.m. at first light, to see what kind of situation we had.

Twister was still alive....but she had gotten BACK into the gulley.

All the horsey people who came to help, looked her over, checked her teeth, and told me she's NOT the 2 y.o. I believed her to be. They all think she's 25-30. and was trying to go off to 'die in peace'. I've been told that horses know their time and will find their spot to give up the ghost. (I find that hard)

She was gaining weight. She was learning to trust us. She'd whinny when she heard the truck show up at feeding times and would charge for her 'feeding spot'. Yes, she's been wormed, and she has ALSO gotten the 'best stuff' that folks recommend.

TOMORROW was the day that she was going to meet Mr. Farrier. (whether she liked it or not)

When I left her about an hour ago, she was still alive. I left because she had crushed me underneath her, for over an hour, and I needed help.(I KNOW my arm's broke and my knees dislocated, and my back is a joke) I've got hubby out, to have a friend go to put her down. She needs to be released to run free again. (and that's ripping my heart apart)

Oh dear lord what a horrendous, horrendous ordeal. I am so so sorry. With yours and Markies injuries, you both need to get to the hospital.
But please, no matter what, don't be hard on yourself. You certainly had no control over this happening, and you did the best that you could for that horse. Even though everything is so heartbreaking.

I have been were you are. You are doing the right thing, as much as it hurts. There's a red leopard appaloosa mare and a red doberman waiting at the rainbow bridge for her, and they will keep her company 'til we get there.

I though I had it rough lately... Praying for her. That said. You and I need to talk. You were having fun with me right? lol. The only response I got from touching her around her butt hole was a lifted foot. I don't know if she was telling me to back off or enjoying it!

I got a nap and downloaded the pictures - I can't believe I only took three with my camera. Bob did take quite a few with his though, so once they are printed, I'll post a couple of those.

The show was great, although our horses did not do well at all. Incredible turnout for the first of the year and (this is cool) three more appaloosa people there. A girl whose husband is stationed at the Fallon NAS with a gorgeous gelding (he took first in our class) and then a mother and a daughter from south of us, probably drove 2-2 1/2 hours. The girl is 11yrs old, showing two apps, one a black and white gelding (like you like, Miss Targets) and the other a red app. They were both nice horses although the black and white would be better suited to English I think, except for the color, very thoroughbred looking. She is in 4H. Another friend who owns the sire of Tuffy, brought her 2yr old leopard filly (she won a 1st place and a third)

A lot of Paint people that usually go to the breed shows, a friend with her new Paint mare (wish I had taken a picture of her) that she paid $10,000 for. Another friend with a new 2yr old Palomino stud that really looked like a gold coin. He didn't place well but he was showing against some really top horses, a Paint stud and a buckskin stud (who was outstanding).

Anyway, in the Halter Class, 13 entries in our group, Prez placed fourth, Indy did not place. Then in the color class, 14 entries and neither of them placed. Indy looked and acted like a million dollars though, so I was very proud of him. I promised him a beer if he did good and he got it. Prez did not.

Hopefully, this will convince Kim, who shows Prez, that yes, he does need a little work before a show. She did not come over and work him at all, and in fact, told me a week ago, "Prez doesn't need any work, he knows exactly what to do". He may know, but on his own, he sure isn't going to go turn some of the flab into muscle, and without a reminder or two, he's not going to pay any attention to his handler.

Next show the end of June, with an endurance ride before then, and two more foals due.

The injections went really well. She flinched a little when the needle went in but stood perfectly still. Eddie did one side and I did the other. It was thick and she did great. Her breathing sounds better but she is still running a 103 temp and staying under trees. I didn't hose her down today though. Yesterday we were in the 100's. A cold front came in and it's in the 70's now and windy and I didn't think it would be good to get her wet. She is still coughing really hard though when she walks or eats. It's a rust color now. I hope that is just from coughing so hard.

Hi all. Just woke up.

Markie's OK. She was on her way to Kelsi's when the wreck happened. (I think to get advice from Minnie, Kelsi's Mom) She kept on going to Minnie's. Minnie is a RN. She examined her and said that it wasn't serious enough to go to the hosp. She said that they'd tell us the same thing as what SHE advised. Watch her while she sleeps. If she can't be easily roused, take her in. Watch for signs of lethargy, 'unco-ordination', unusual behavior, unequal pupils, etc.

I'm OK also. Broken bones are not a biggie for me. The last time I had a cast for a break was back in '72. The ONLY reason I had it casted was because I kept banging it while at work and it irritated me. LOL.

I've been lucky in never having SERIOUS breaks. These kinds of breaks hurt like hell, but they are MORE tolerable than a bruised bone. heh....the past couple months, I've been living with a couple cracked ribs and a broken bone in my foot. I'll be fine, everything's gonna be OK.

Hubby came home earlier and said that Pete was going to do what was needed for Twister. He choked back the tears as he said that he couldn't stay there for it. THAT was rather unsettling for me. He's one of those guys that have/show NO gushy 'emotion', NOTHING ruffles their feathers, nothing upsets them. (he's ex-Army Ranger) When he came home, he was 'knee-walkin--commode huggin' drunk. He didn't even get that way when his Mom passed.

I just HAVE to thank y'all for being here. You'll never realize how comforting it is to have you here as 'shoulders' to cry on. It makes it a little easier to deal with. And it makes me feel a little LESS stupid for not accepting the idea that this is part of having horses. How I WISH we had a Saddle Club back when Cassady died.

AGAIN, thank you. Bless you ALL. I'll post again when I'm not such a basket case. (don't want to aggravate anyone with my rambling/grief)

I am so sorry for the ordeal you have been going through. Have you been to the hospital? Are you in a cast? Your ordeal shows me what a strong person you must be.

I do hope that your and Markie are OK... I'm a little concerned that neither of you seem to want to see doctors, I mean, I hate doctors but ~really~ sometimes you have to go!

I hope the horse has some peace now. I wouldn't have done it that way, but I can certainly accept that you've done all you can and it's time to make hard decisions.

Prayers up for you and your family. And of course for Twister.
