This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good grief, what's going on? Has she been sick? I'm afraid to ask but, how is she this morning?
This is in NO WAY your fault. Dying in a ditch would be my preference over being knocked in the head. You did the right thing by rescuing her, no matter what the outcome.
Duchess is right, I'd take a buggy whip out there and beat the crap out of anything that acted agressive towards me. A few times of that and they'll be avoiding you like the plague. If the horses owners don't like it, too damn bad. Your well-being is alot more important than their stoopid, agressive horses. If Tuffy acted like he was going to hurt someone who was trying to get through a gate, they would have my permission to lay marks on his hide.
Oh I hope for the best! Have you had a vet out?
lol. I know but "me and Sarah Lee" don't give them the opportunity to turn thier butts. We walk in circles sometimes but stay facing them. Sometimes it's a long way out:')
I'm sorry about your horse.
I had trouble getting the last page of posts to post. Just now got to read them. Hope everything has been resolved by now.
Becky
Oh that is so sad. She was in such poor condition when you got her. Wasn't she gaining weight? Do you think she was wormy? Prayers for her recovery.
Don't feel that way. She had no chance before you rescued her. You gave her a home and love. I see this was yesterday though. Praying for you anyway.
I used to feel that way. Kind of like hitting someone elses kid. Maybe I'm over cautious though caz like I said, I don't give them the opportuntiy to get close. I don't know if it's friendly or not but I let Sarah Lee get kicked once and since then if they start heading my way I start circling the lead rope. The geldings follow at a respectful distance and I'll even pet them after I have Okie out. Those women can be very sturborn sometimes though.I still don't let them get closer than probably 20 feet. I'll turn Sarah Lee around and go after them.
LOL!! It's a good thing there wasn't any open flame or you'd've gotten a new "do". ;o)
Seriously though, and this sounds gross, but you can tickle or scratch just above their butt-hole and they'll raise their tail themselves.
Well it can't be any more gross than what I was doing:') I'll try that today. Any shot hints? I have to give her two in different locations today and she shows her butt with just a little 22 gauge. I'm thinking about just needle sticking her first.
I pray that she makes it, but you should never feel guilty about giving her a good home, and maybe the only love she'd ever known, even if it turns out to be only for a short time. It's better whan what she had and you're better for having done it. :o)
I used to tap, slap, or "knock" on the area first but I've decided that that gives them too much time to worry about it and get all tore up. It seems to work best to just do it quick. First, wipe the area with alcohol and a cotton ball, then act like that's all you're gonna do for a second or two so they forget about it, then just smack the needle in there, fast and hard. Mine don't even act like they feel it that way.
If she still prances around even doing it that way, then do what you were talking about and smack her with just the needle and wait for her to settle before you attach the syringe.
What are you having to give her?
Baytril. She got two injections Thur and gets two more today and then he's coming back out mon. It's after it's in that she becomes a drama queen. I'm going to pop her with the syringe intact but if she jumps away I'm going to try just the needle the second time.
I don't know. I wasn't there. The vet had the owner pick up the rest at his office. Immz in a tb syringe isn't thick either though :')
I saw Duchess's post about banamine. That's some good stuff. When Okie was sick the ver gave him about 10cc I guess. I was thinking he was awfully high on the neck and when he drew back and got blood I commented "uh, you giving it IV?" he just grinned and said yeah. Okie got a glazed look on his face for a couple of seconds and T was thinking "great, we just finished him off" and then he perked up and seemed to feel much better.
Good luck. Did you ever figure out what it was that the vet gave her when he came out and didn't call you?
I've seen those needles. They're huge. I had to help a friend of mine out when her horse came up lame. Found a nail puncture on his leg, and had a fever and infection, so the vet popped him with some antibiotics. Horse didn't even flinch.
It was baytril.
