All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar announced his retirement Saturday.

The 37-year-old Alomar, who inked a contract with Tampa Bay in January, had been sidelined the past week with a back problem before returning to the Devil Rays' lineup Friday night.

Alomar leaves the game as a career .300 hitter with 210 homers, 1,134 RBI and 474 stolen bases over 17 seasons with San Diego, Toronto, Baltimore, Cleveland, Arizona, the Chicago White Sox (news) and the New York Mets (news). He was a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner and was an All-Star 12 times, including 11 straight years from 1991-2001.

He is one of only seven players in major league history with a .300 average, 400 steals and 500 doubles, joining Ty Cobb, Ed Delahanty, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, Paul Molitor and Barry Bonds.

Robbie had three terrific years for Cleveland from 1999-2001. Despite the spitting incident with umpire John Hirschbeck in 1996, he's a first ballot Hall of Famer, IMO.

It's telling about the character of the guy when, upon his retirement the spitting incident gets mentioned right along with his stats.

I always liked Robbie anyways, definitely a HoFer.

We got to watch the best and most amazing middle-infield combination in the history of baseball for three years. Omar and Robbie made the amazing routine and the unbelievable common.

Robbie and Hirschbeck became friends after the incident, which Hirschbeck later all-but admitted was partly his fault.

First ballot HOFer all the way. No question. Although, I thought Ryne Sandberg should have been a no-brainer, too.
