Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty
3/15/05

Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Hey! Sorry for posting this new thread. I am not sure, maybe there is already a thread on the problem I’d like to discuss now. Still I want to say something else on the issue. I am sure you all know it is much told and discussed over the CTBT - the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty - and the role of America in it. The CTBT was designed to prevent testing of nuclear weapons and hence reduce the chance of an arms race. I am an American patriot and I believe that the US Senate did absolutely right in October 13, 1999, when decided not to ratify the CTBT. You may say whatever you want, I will always stand for this decision. The world is no more a safe place. There is the looming threat of China and still of Russia due to their nuclear capabilities (along with Pakistan and India). We have to protect ourselves and our Motherland. That is why it would be absolutely correct of this state not to ratify the Treaty and go on with nuclear researches so that we could get more and more powerful nuclear weapons. Still, it is not all I wanted to say. The problem is we got to think about nuclear security INSIDE the country. No secret, the nuclear facilities are guarded. Still I do not think they are guarded the way they should be. The problem is that the security of nuclear sites is run by private protection agencies where the staff recruitment leaves much to be desired. Some security guards are Islamite by religion, many others have poor physical training (that makes them an easy target for attacks of terrorists or other criminals). what is more, the guards at nuclear sites often fall asleep when at watch. It is clear that such carelessness of some responsible persons may lead to a terrible catastrophe thousand times more deadly than the 9/11. As the facts say, Islamic terrorists can easily enter the territory of the U.S. and execute dozens of local atomic explosions at nuclear sites. I think you know what it was like in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It makes me faint when I start thinking of it. By the way, once I came across a map of America at one of Arabic web-sites where all American nuclear facilities were mapped. Of course, I am no expert and cannot say whether it is true or false but the map looked quite credible. The only thing I feel certain about is that they positively harbor plans to revenge for the war in Iraq and others. And that threatens me.

But you're OK with N. Korea and Iran?

Uh, where did you come up with this theory?

I live near Surry Power Plant, a nuclear facility. A close friend of mine is an Engineer there. Security is tight and there aren't any "islamist" in the group.

Motherland?

You got me! For the first time in at least a month, I actually did laugh out loud!

First time I'd heard that, and you should charge anyone who wants to use it as a tag-line.

The CTBT is one issue, and physical security of our nuclear power plants is another. Do you have a URL of the maps you mention?

James is very suspicious of people who say, "We have to protect ourselves and our Motherland." The capital letter *really* creeps him out!

Really? They can just whip up some nuclear devices and detonate them right on the spot, huh?

Since it's so easy, why haven't these guys done it yet? I mean, they have a map!!

I can't say much...for obvious reasons. But I have a friend who is an engineer at a nuke power plant. I have a background in physical security, network security, and information warfare. So I asked him some VERY pointed questions about the state of their security. His answers convinced me that (at least at his nuke plant), nobody was going to survive trying to maliciously bypass security systems in place.

Um, no, not atomic explosions. Nope.

Blowing a nuke plant from the inside is hard enough....are you talking about bringing powerplant fuel to fission? Sheesh....and compress it inside of what? ...the concrete walls of the plant?
