Having problems getting POP email via Outlook Express

I use Outlook Express to get incoming email from my own domain server (i.e. www.myname.com). For the past few days (and also in the past) I have been unable to get incoming mail. After a few moments of connection, I get the following message:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.[myname].com', Server: 'mail.[myname].com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

However, if I disconnect from my high speed internet connection and use a dialup account, I CAN get my incoming mail. Therefore, I believe the problem is with the high speed internet connection (or ISP) rather than with my mail server or my computer.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated. Is there anything I can do on my end, or is it strictly an ISP issue?

I'd try "telnet mail.[myname].com 110" and see if there is any response.

Don't know if that would work on Windows, but open the command prompt and give it a try. It should give a "POP3 ... server ready" message if the connection is successful.

I was just looking to see how long before someone said you needed to stop using Microsoft products.

You might want to try something like Mailwasher as a test tool. Mailwasher can be configured to access your mail server and access messages and let you read them before downloading them to your PC. It would be interesting to see if it can connect to your server. Plus it's free.

Or you could download and install the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client and see if it can connect properly. I shunned Outlook Express for Thunderbird long ago and haven't missed Outlook at all. Thunderbird's adaptive "learning" spam filter is awesome.

Go into Outlook Express under your high-speed configuration. Go into properties and click on the Server tab. Select the checkbox that says "This server requires authentication" or something like that. Also select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server". This should fix the problem (assuming that you are currently able to send outgoing email).

I was just looking to see how long before someone said you needed to stop using Microsoft products.

If the problem turns out to be a virus or spyware, that was going to be my next suggestion.

It is possible that a firewall (e.g Zone Alarm, Norton), virus scanner (e.g. Norton, Sygate), or a proxy based spam filter (e.g. Pop File) is blocking or interfering with your e-mail program.

Log on to the email site to see if there is an extra-large email that won't download. This happened to me. I deleted it at the source, and all problems disappeared.
