Ruger and S&W
7MAR05 | My own bad self

Posted on 03/07/2005 6:58:29 AM PST by Gefreiter

If anyone owns or has experience with a S&W 457 or Ruger P97 I'd like to hear from you. I'm considering these models but can afford only one. Mission will be range gun with occasional carry.

I live close enough to S&W to buy from the factory, which puts the Smith and this model Ruger in the same price range.

Any advice concerning these weapons is welcome.

Thanks in advance,

g

when I have more money to spend on big boy toys

My mantra at work, as the IT Client Architect for a Fortune 100 company, when people talk about my "toys"

They're not toys! They are necessary business tools.

That's not a joke.

This applies in spades to this discussion.

If you think it's the necessary tool to get the job done then screw the price. These aren't toys.

I have a well founded fondness for Rugers, either auto or wheel gun.

Though S&W is in sane hands now, there is that lingering stench about them that will always haunt me, but that's personal. S&W is a fine tool for the intended job.

Go with the one you feel more comfortable with as they are both, technically, excellet products. Right now I don't trust that S&W won't end up in the hands of another anti-gun nut foreigner. But that's me and almost certainly irrelevant.

It appears that the rifling does indeed vary somewhat from model to model.
But some of the models have been dropped from production.
(1:12 rifling sounds kinda odd, wonder how it performs.)

I have a puter program here somewhere that matches the twist rate with the ammunition . It was gift from a wildcatter....... It was expensive having barrels made for the commercial loads vs reloading ammo for the barrels I had......it took me a few grey cells more than I could spare to figure that magic out ......:o)

Gotta echo Squantos on that. I have both, although not that model of Smith. The Blackhawk has a 6" barrel and is my revenge piece for when some turkey lights off a cannon in the lane next to me indoors. Lots of muzzle blast.

Now, this is just a subjective impression so take it with a grain of salt, but to me the .41 seems to have a more percussive feel to it than a .44 magnum. Sharper recoil, different sound. The .44 seems to be actually a bit more pleasant, although some of that is due to load and some of it to a longer barrel on my .44. Your mileage may vary.

The .41 magnum was originally envisioned as a law enforcement round to replace the .38 special, but since most LEO's don't practice as much as they should there was a major issue with recoil control. (That's the issue that sidelined the 10mm semi, BTW, which the FBI was considering as a follow-on to the 9mm for the same purpose - great cartridge, but a bit of a handful for someone not used to it).

As for the issue others have mentioned, revolver versus semiauto, I have a simple, universal answer - you need one of each. Several of each. LOTS of each. Harrumph.

And that's counting the two 155 rounds they dressed up! :)

I see Squantos answered your question. I sort of picture him like Yul Brenner in the 10 Commandments, holding a BAR and saying "So let it be written, so let it be done."
