If anyone owns or has experience with a S&W 457 or Ruger P97 I'd like to hear from you. I'm considering these models but can afford only one. Mission will be range gun with occasional carry.
I live close enough to S&W to buy from the factory, which puts the Smith and this model Ruger in the same price range.
Any advice concerning these weapons is welcome.
Thanks in advance,
g
Actually, post reasons please. I'm hoping to buy soon and would love to her the pros and cons of both.
Gef has some questions abotu guns, questions in artcile.
So I'll ping some that I know that may be able to answer.
Yes, that would be you guys.
*chuckle*

For the price, can't beat the Ruger, it'll last forever and will hit what it's aimed at...but I'm fond of Rugers
Admittedly, I like my itty bitty Ruger 10/22.
Though my 'prejudice' and 'bias' runs towards higher calibers.. like 105mm.
When they get a nice shooting 30mm semi-auto out there, I may consider getting it.
(Call it 'howitzer addiction'...)
I'd go with the smith & wesson revolver......as ya state it's local and available . IMHO a much better rig that any ruger auto short of their Mk II rimfire series which are awesome as are rugers wheel guns. I don't care for their other autos.
I'll ask why the 41 mag ? Have you considered a 44 or 357 Mag so that lower powered "specials" can be used for carry or plinking ? Versitility with the .44 mag would seem to be a better choice. Carry 44 specials for self defense & hunt and or compete on steel chickens with 44 magnums......
just my opinion......
Was looking at some of the new big bore revolvers, came to the conclusion that I am just too short and skinny for one.
I have rather small hands, so finding something for myself would be difficult at best.
S,
The model 457 is a .45 semi:

Now, someday...some distant day, when I have more money to spend on big boy toys, I'll take a S&W 686, ported, with the 6" barrel.
Not that I need to compensate for anything, mind you...
Here's what I'd been looking at and figured I'd end up wearing the front sight in my forehead..

Seiously consider a Glock 30.
It works every time you pull the trigger.
It holds 11 rounds of .45ACP.
It can be had for about $450.
I carry it.
In His Forever Grip

Now listen to your Uncle Slim... I shoot a ton of N Frame Smiths and I have relatively small hands and am pretty skinny to boot. You shouldn't have any problem getting a grip that will fit your hand properly.
There's tons of aftermarket wood and rubber grips that will work.
Check out the Smith forum:

I'm over there under the same screen-name.
FReeper inquiring about Ruger semiautos over here.
"Now, someday...some distant day, when I have more money to spend on big boy toys, I'll take a S&W 686, ported, with the 6" barrel."
I love the L frame. I want the 686 with the 7 shot cylinder and a 3 inch barrel. Nice little concealable just like my 596 in .44 SPL.
I don't need no steenkeen compensator either. You make me laugh!
Ah.
Okers.
I kinda tend to judge stuff from firing the M16.
I couldn't hold it the way they said to do so.
It was too darn long!
(I am pretty skinny and short)
And teh M9 berettas felt like a VCR VHS tape in my hands.
So that's where my mental pic of fit comes from.
As far as whether or not I'd end up wearing the friont sight in my forehead..
That I base off the mental image of whether or not I can hold the darn thing to begin with.
Willdo.
And I'll keep this info in the forefront of memory.
Doesn't the single action kind of pull like a revolver?
