The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Except for some reason, lately, they've taken to changing it to "Jesus Christ is Risen Today" which doesn't scan nearly as well and throws me off because I remember the old way.

Yeah, I am that way with the Creeds. I memorized the old version of them when I was a kid, and I still have a tendency to say the old versions.

Well, I dunno about the ability to sing in a certain time ... you need a strong soloist, a gifted pianist, and a very fine organist! Drums and a small horn section don't hurt, either ...

For turning out church at Eastertime ...

How I Got Over

How I got over?
How I got over!
My soul looks back and I wonder
How I got over?

How I got over?
How I got over!
My soul looks back and I wonder
How I got over?

Just as soon as I can see Jesus
The Man that died for me!
The Man that bled and suffered
Hung out on Calvary!

I thank Him because He taught me!
I thank Him because He brought me!
I thank Him because He kept me!
I thank Him because He never left me!

I thank Him for the Holy Bible!
I thank Him for good ol' revival!
I thank Him for heavenly vision!
I thank Him for ol' time religion!

Well, I'm gonna sing!
Hallelujah!
You know I'm gonna shout!
Hallelujah!
I'm gonna thank Him
For all He's done for me!

You know, I'm gonna wear a diadem
In the new Jerusalem!
I'm gonna walk the streets of gold
In the homeland of the soul!
I'm gonna view the Host in white!
I'm gonna travel both day and night!
Coming up from every nation,
On their way to the great Coronation!
Coming from the north, south, east, and west,
On their way to the land of rest!
I'm gonna join the heavenly choir!
I'm gonna sing and never get tired!

Well, I'm gonna sing!
Hallelujah!
You know I'm gonna shout!
Hallelujah!
I'm gonna thank Him
For all He's done for me!

Thank Him in the morning!
Thank Him in the nooning!
Thank Him in the evening when the sun is going down ...!
Thank you, Lord, for being so good to me!

Nope, that's got too many verses, not enough syllables per line, and too much repition - wouldn't qualify as a hymn under the old definition. Might get in through the praise band section but that's iffy. Maybe get the worship team to do it during the offeratory.

;-)

I'm still here for a few minutes ... listening to gospel tracks.

I went and got an old hymnal I bought back in our salad days ... it was published in 1925. It's nice, knowing that words that were old in the 1920s are still being recorded and played today.

What's up with you this evening, Master Sea-man? Keeping one eye on the mountain and one eye on Seattle, I hope ...

<snicker>So I guess the part where the 250lb contralto soloist in 2.5inch pumps starts high-stepping in front of the choir and waving her free hand above her head is out, huh???

Listening to Sam Cooke when he sang for the Soul Stirrers. A capella, four-part harmony, and absolutely beautiful.

Just the high-stepping hand-waving part. The only people who get solos in the churches I go to tend to be the sopranos (cuz they're pushy and haven't learned like the rest of the choir that to make good music, you blend with everyone else)

We have to have accompaniment to hide the fact that nobody can sing along right...

Sopranos can't sing a lot of the good songs ...!

And the preacher's gotta sing, too. Lots and lots of singing is necessary!

Got your Easter bonnet yet?

I'm going cheap this year and wearing last year's Easter bonnet. But I'm glad it's warm weather so I can wear my spring/summer hats, I have three times as many of those as of winter hats.

Sopranos think they can sing anything worth singing. Not true, of course. And altos get the fun parts, anyway.

Good night!

Good morning!

Two hour delay for work...which about gives me time to shovel out and drink my coffee. Not that exciting.

Jen...I dunno the other hymns you mentioned, but I don't think I've ever been ANYWHERE on Good Friday where we didn't sing "O Sacred Head Surrounded". I think there's a law.

We didn't get as much snow as I'd hoped. Maybe seven or eight inches, I guess, best I can tell. I guess I'll feel differently about it after I've been out there shoveling for a bit...

Note to self: never judge amount of snowfall by the amount standing on a vehicle if the wind is blowing so hard that the nextdoor neighbor's flag is out perfectly straight...

It's zero out there. And the wind is blowing insanely. I had to come in for a bit so my fingers could thaw. Wish I had better gloves!

Good morning!

It's supposed to be 72 degrees here on Sat! I hope to do something pleasurable THIS weekend. Like figure out a way to haul my bug outside so I can clean it!
