Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And take the hidden paths that run...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

We have finally covered all topics in the Hobbit Hole. MOMMY: Corin, what did you learn in the Hobbit Hole today?
CORIN: We talked about chocolate vomit and strip joints and brothels and crabs and leaky bowels and everybody was farting...
MOMMY: We start homeschooling tomorrow...
'nite folks

Heh, you and Rose can have fun arguing discussing Heinlein.

I didn't bring up any of those things ;~D
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Yes, indeed! Though I mean to see if I can find a copy of "Friday" at the library. I've heard it's good for being late Heinlein. I'm just such a sucker for space opera, and I grew up on those early Heinlein novels, that the later ones seem wrong to me...
I'll try to save it for the moot ;-D

I just take my chances with real sugar and real fat.
It helps to reduce the odds that I will fart or leak my bowels in front of my co-workers.

Rose likes it, mostly.
Just out of curiosity, have you looked up and read any other "golden age" SF, such as the Lensman books by "Doc" Smith, or anything by A.E. van Vogt?

Good night! We may go soon too... Last night's South Park was so good, I think I want to watch it again.

No, I never run across anyone but the big names, somehow. I have some random assorted novels, a few republished collections of stories, and that's very much it.
I found an early SF anthology recently - I forget what the theme that tied it together was - with stories by all sorts of great names. It was really fascinating to see what the future was like back in 1948. In some ways, I like their 2000 a lot more than ours. In others... well, nobody really saw the internet until the late 70s/early 80s...

well, nobody really saw the internet until the late 70s/ early 80sNot true! ;) Murray Leinster featured both PCs and the Internet (not by those names, of course) in his short story "A Logic Named Joe", first published in Astounding Science Fiction in March, 1946.
Hmm, let's see what's on our shelves... the "Sector General" books my James White; collections of short stories by Zenna Henderson, Murray Leinster, and C.M. Kornbluth (all published by the SF Book Club, by the way); Slan and The Empire of Isher by A.E. van Vogt; the 6 Lensman books by E.E. "Doc" Smith (in two editions, btw); oh, and lots of other stuff by the Big Names that you're already familiar with.
That's the hardcovers...
Oh, a neat story collection you might look for (it's out of print I think, but might be found in a library) is Galactic Empires, volumes 1 and 2. It not only presents a lot of good Golden Age stories, it analyzes the different kinds of "Galactic Empire" stories that have been published over the years.

Forgot to include, the Galactic Empires collection was edited by Brian Aldiss.

Clare and I may be down your way this Nov. Ave Maria Univ. has an Open House for prospective students to come and stay for a couple of days. I could come over and see you! The Univ. is just Northeast of Naples, so that's what, 2 or 3 hours from you?

Well, two of the companies for which SSQ had options no longer exist. They were bought out by and folded into the new one, and the old stock options were no longer valid, I guess.

I was over the weight limit in 1980 when I'd just graduated from college. We just won't talk about now.It would be cruel and unusual punishment for a mule to have to carry me! I'll just ride down the river in one of those cool boats! I don't mind getting wet, and I can swim! ;o)
