I don't know that you can. Which is why I would have never made the outlandish claim you did, in order to push some software over on people. You misrepresent, in your anxiousness to trick everyone into using your product. Quite unethical, but constant with you guys. Ernest claiming there wasn't any viruses for Linux yesterday was another perfect example, yet even after I blew him out of the water on that claim, here he is back on this thread, harrassing me. You guys need to dose of reality. And humility.

This whole thing started when you said

Except that you can't set "Linux" to patch daily.

"Linux" includes all versions of Linux. And despite your claims, you can't patch them all automatically. I got you to agree some time ago you wouldn't fling the term "Linux" around any more, that you would be specific about what distro meant what, but you can't help yourself. And now it's bitten you in the rear, since "Linux" for PS/2 can't be auto updated.

You, Ernest, and others need to get over your obsession with Linux to the point of lying about it. Just some friendly advice, if you ever want to gain any credibility.

I'm using Zone Alarm too and am pleased with it. Up until this week I've only had the free version, but right now I'm trying out their subscriber version to see if I want to pay for it.

Two times I've tried to add the SP2 patch for Windows, but both times it will get well into the operation and then send up an error message with the dreaded red X that says, "Access denied." Then it undoes the process until things are restored. I have absolutely no freaking idea what access is denied. Typical of Microsoft to give you way less information than you need.

We have Mozilla and I may start using it more, but if I can stick with IE and not run into any really major risks I'd prefer that. Maybe I'm naive about that though.

I've stayed with windows 2000 and have my own CD of service pack 4.

Free zone alarm firewall is enough as long as you avoid porn and German sites.

If something was to sneak by, the zone alarm would announce it trying to access stuff and you can delete it before it gets embedded.

Microsoft gives free telephone support for SP2 issues, try 1-866-PCSAFETY. I had to use it once on a system myself. Actually got an American to help me, although I may have been lucky. Good luck to you as well.

Thanks for your advice. I need all I can get.

I've got another problem I'd like to run past you two. I've been using a freeware called WinPatrol with its cute little mascot, Scottie the watchdog. It alerts you whenever a new program tries to start up. I heard about it from Kim Komando and she was recommending it.

A few months ago it kept telling me that WTools.exe was trying to start. I did a little online research and found that this is a very persistent bug and not easy to get rid of. Using TaskMan and SpyBot, both of which I downloaded specifically for this job, I was able to get rid of it everywhere as far as I can tell.

The problem is that Scottie is apparently not convinced. Every day - in fact every 90 minutes - he barks that WTools.exe is trying to start. But the folder where it says it exists was wiped out long ago and still doesn't even exist. That was one of my first solutions, but didn't work. TaskMan and SpyBot find no signs of WTools.exe so I'm confused about what, if anything, I need to do. But I know I want Scottie to quit barking false warnings.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. Either little Scottie is wrong, or he is still sniffing something in your system. My guess is even thought the files are gone there may be something left in your registry or start menu that is attempting to call the program up, and it may be finding some hidden files. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del then look at the active processes, see if you see it.

Also try running the "msconfig" utilty from your Start/Run menu, see if you see anything related to Wtools. Also go into Control Panel/Services and disable any service it may have installed. You may need to go into "safe mode" to be effective, which you can find by pressing the F8 key when your system is first booting up.

I'd also try Ad-Aware which I think is a little better than Spybot. If you carefully go through those processes, which will take some time, you should be able to root it out. Then go into IE, Options, Privacy, Advanced, Override, and set your system to block all 3rd party cookies, and prompt for 1st party. That should help prevent things like this from getting on there. Most of all, be very careful of saying "yes" to anything. Good luck.

You have to find a site featuring manual removal directions.

You have to remove the main file.
Remove the other ones it dumped at the same time to replicate itself and lastly you must remove references to the files in the registry.

To edit registry, you go to run, enter regedit and you are there.
But unless you have directions about what you are going to do, don't do anything.
