How do you respond to a third grader who is being brainwashed by a very liberal teacher?
self

My grandaughter, out of the blue last week, said she wished that Kerry was president.

When I asked her why,she really had no response, she's in third grade after all. She then said everyone in her class wished Kerry was president(no surprise there in a very liberal schools system).

She then said that her teacher had told them we were at war in Iraq because Bush wanted the oil. I was stunned.

I then told her that I had voted for Bush and that more people in the USA had wanted Bush for president than had wanted Kerry and that her teacher's view on the war was an opinion, not a fact.

Why on earth would a teacher say things like this to a child who thinks if the teacher said it then it must be true.

They use similar surveys in Delaware.

Move your granddaughter to Texas. At our local grade school their mock election had 224 for Bush and 34 for Kerry. We raise 'em right in Texas (excluding Austin and the Rio Grande colonias).

Have a meeting with the principle ASAP! I'd do my best to transfer the kid to another teacher if it's possible, and ti would be even better if the teacher is fired. Political indoctrination like this is unacceptable, whether the teacher is liberal or conservative. Kids at this age are not capable of understanding things like politics, and should not be subject to this type of indoctrination.

What else could I have said to one so young?

How about, "Your teacher is an ignorant monkey who has her job because the public school system is a vast works program for the intellectually defective"?

In the public school system where this took place, the teacher would probably be promoted, not fired.

This is a school system that has a Gay Pride Day in the high schools----need I say more?

You could have told her different people have different ideas and opinions and you disagree with what her teacher said and explain why (in language she would understand). There are a lot of people who still believe the war was about oil. I do find it amusing that so many people on here defend all types of free speech (such as cable indecency, etc.) but let a public school teacher offer an opinion, and everyone wants to shut her up. And no, I am not a teacher and my kids survived public school and are fine conservatives. We want to teach our kids to think for themselves, don't we?

If Bush went into Iraq for the oil, why didn't we take it in 1991 when we first went into Iraq? Why didn't we invade Venezuela instead, which has a lot of oil and is a lot closer?

I will open up the discussion the next time she and I are alone.

My kids all went to public school also, and I taught in public schools----it's the system she is in that has become so far to the left it astonishes me.

People have moved from town because of the liberalism, but more liberals move in to take their places.

She's too young-----not ready for that kind of a discussion with a teacher yet.

You take the kid to the teacher and let them watch you chew the teacher out about keeping politics out of the classroom. And then you report the complaint to the principal the school board and district office. Let the kid know that opinion by a teacher should be clearly stated as an opinion or better yet- that the teacher should keep thier loosely collected socilistic utopian nonsense to themselves.

You gave a good answer, Mears and didn't overload her with too much information to absorb.

So now, this is the second experience she's had with teachers being in conflict with her Grammy.

The indoctrination attempt could very well have unintended consequences; your granddaughter may be more wary in the future about teachers' credibility.

This would be an advantage when political issues are being discussed, but could cause havoc when long division is the subject.

This teacher should be ordered to cease politicizing the classroom.

"I told my own daughter when she came back from school saying Bush is stupid to not protect nor subsidize the type of people who tell her that. They are not her parents and have only interest in their job, not her welfare, they could care less about her but of being the teacher and getting $$s, and that is why they want Bush out, to kill her, and keep their jobs."

Interesting attempt to try and sound like what you THINK a conservative would sound.
But your comment about the teachers wanting to kill your daughter, and your incoherent vanity thread, says that you are a troll.

I had the same problem with teachers from 1992 on. I got tired of trying to fight it and have learned that if you want to complain about indoctrination in the classroom, you START with the principal. It ticks off the teachers, but they would be defensive, hostile, etc., if you started with them anyway and start taking it out on the child immediately.

You also need to get ahold of textbooks and see if the things discussed in class go along with the books. If they do, complain about the books. If not, complain that they are not following the agenda set forth in the text curriculum.

If you need more ideas or support, please let me know. My cause as a mother has been to create classroom environments that teach children "how" rather than "what" to think.

I'll discuss this with her mother or father when the opportunity arises.

They lead a very busy life and have 2 younger children and, needless to say, when we get together chaos reigns(and I love it).

I do sleepovers with all of my grandchildren, one at a time, and the next time I am with this grandaughter I may ease into the subject.I don't want to overwhelm her,as you mentioned.

I'm the grandmother and will leave all the school intervention to her parents.

This was a great school system when my kids went to school, one of the top 10 in the nation, and along around the late seventies there was a change,an incredible change.

The straw that broke the camel's back was a new mayor in 1997 who appointed an appalling Superintendant of School. He actually said to a member of the TV press "I don't have to answer to anyone"

It's been a downward slide for the last 8 years.
