Should pornography be illegal?
Feb 28th 2005 | Me

Prostitution: one adult pays another adult for sex- is illegal

Pornography: Where one adult pays two adults to have sex and brings a camera, This is legal.

Pornography has been around for over one hundred years, since the time of the camera,

but it has only been the last few decades where it became the money making industry that it is today. And today's pornography is much much worse.

This question came to me after reading this article

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1353029/posts

an excerpt "The Justice Department is appealing the dismissal of an obscenity case in Pittsburgh in which a federal judge said prosecutors went too far in trying to block the sale of pornographic movies over the Internet and through the mail. The case initially was prosecuted under Ashcroft""

Should pornography be illegal?

It's an opinion question, you answer, give your reasons. Is it free speech or not? Why. And where is the line drawn? Has pornography promoted homosexuality and unsafe sex? Or is it a privacy issue?

Should there be standards on pornography?

Concerned Women for America say No- what do you think?

"Should pornography be illegal?"

It doesn't really matter one way or the other. You just can't find a pornograph player anymore.

So pornography was not mass distributed.

Sorry, but you are wrong again.

Check out some of the murals in the public bath houses in Pompeii.

One of these days you really should read a history book or two.

195 - Sorry, my definition of pornography doesn't agree with yours:

"Main Entry: por·nog·ra·phy
Pronunciation: -fE
Function: noun
Etymology: Greek pornographos, adjective, writing about prostitutes, from pornE prostitute + graphein to write; akin to Greek pernanai to sell, poros journey -- more at FARE, CARVE
1 : the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement
2 : material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement"

I think sexual excitement is fine. In fact, it is the reason most all of us are here.

195 - So, photographing something debases its value?

Better tell all the sports figures and movie personalities that.

""I would instead try to deliver the message that many things are legal not because they're good, but because some people just have to learn the hard way why they're bad.""

But people aren't learning the hard way. Abortion is legal and all that has contributed to is more abortion.

First of all, if you believe that abortion infringes upon the rights of the unborn, then that in and of itself would be basis for severely restricting it (with exceptions as needed to protect a mother from death or severe bodily harm).

Secondly, I think one of the major problems of abortion is that many well-meaning people who have been trying to ban it have made it allowed themselves to be characterized as wanting to demonize anyone who has had an abortion (and, in fact, some would demonize all such people). This, I think, is very unfortunate since it prevents such people from helping others to learn from their mistakes.

What I perceive is happening with abortion is that many people who have either have had an abortion personally or have a loved one who has, see one group (the pro-life side) wanting to demonize them when they already feel bad about it, and another group (the pro-choice side) that they can feel better if they pretend that abortion is okay. What needs to happen is that the pro-life people need to admit that it's okay to have had an abortion when one was naïve and didn't know any better, but that abortion is evil, responsible people will come to realize this, and it is not okay to have an abortion once one knows the truth, nor to try to prevent the spread of the truth to others.

Liberals believe that someone who makes a mistake and discourages others from doing likewise is a hypocrite. They believe instead that one should encourage others to make the same mistake, on the premise that the more people do something wrong, the less wrong it will become.

No,actually,I don't like you at all. Children and yes,you are a child (or someone pretending to be one and not doing a good job of it,BTW),don't belong on FR. Some 18 year olds can and do participate here and do a good job of it;you don't.

I have a far better than average memory,so be careful what you post.A while back, you posted a nonsensical thread about asking how people who don't live in the N.Y.C. made a living and stated that you live on the Island. That's how I know that supposedly you live there.

Listen kid,I know history far better than you ever shall and even though you have twice now, told me to shut up and go away, claiming at first that I have nothing valid nor of import to say ( but now you claim that I have added to this thread and to your knowledge...which is it?),I've done just that.

Had to look up the word "cavil",did you ? Good...keep reading my replies and maybe you'll learn far more than the wretched excuse for schooling you've had thus far.

And as far as that supposed proffered olive branch, well, you can't talk out of both sides of your mouth and have anyone take you seriously.;^)

You query is the dust of the dust of an aged dead horse, beaten to death and dust many times over. You don't even know what pornography is and your specious,Kerryesque replies (No,PLAYBOY ISN'T PORN;YES,PLAYBOY ID PORN ... ONLY PHOTOGRAPHED PORN IS PORN)are not only pointless, but moronic.

That really depends upon which era of PLAYBOY and from which country's edition you're talking about. Not forgetting,of course, that one man's porn is another's erotica.

How would you classify the following.....

1) Ferlinghetti's "COME UP ON THE RAFT,HUCK HONEY" 2)HUSTLER 3) "THE STORY OF O" 4) "THE PEARL" 5)"NAKED LUNCH" ?

Exactly so!

There has been porn in many and various different forms, since mankind made any kind of physical records. From ancient Egyptian papyri,to Greek vase illustrations,to handwritten and illustrated books,to today's versions.

And today's pornography is much much worse.

Pornography, defined, is the graphic depiction of the activies of prostitutes and has been around before there were cameras---thousands of years. When you assert it's getting "worse," you reveal a clear emotional bias, since sex has been going on unchanged for quite a few years now. Unless, of course, you mean sex is getting worse, which is your problem and not mine.

As a rule, women are not typically excited about sexual graphics. Men, however, are and they rely more on visual stimulation than do women. So, if you don't like pornography it may be because you're a woman and not a man.

But, to answer the question posed: The government's involvement in the private, intimate lives of its citizens is not a good thing, is it? Suppose the government decided that reading the bible was illegal (as it is in some countries), does that mean you will comply dutifully and throw out your bible along with your husband's porn?

The dictionary definition of pornography is: Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal.
