Should pornography be illegal?
Feb 28th 2005 | Me

Prostitution: one adult pays another adult for sex- is illegal

Pornography: Where one adult pays two adults to have sex and brings a camera, This is legal.

Pornography has been around for over one hundred years, since the time of the camera,

but it has only been the last few decades where it became the money making industry that it is today. And today's pornography is much much worse.

This question came to me after reading this article

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1353029/posts

an excerpt "The Justice Department is appealing the dismissal of an obscenity case in Pittsburgh in which a federal judge said prosecutors went too far in trying to block the sale of pornographic movies over the Internet and through the mail. The case initially was prosecuted under Ashcroft""

Should pornography be illegal?

It's an opinion question, you answer, give your reasons. Is it free speech or not? Why. And where is the line drawn? Has pornography promoted homosexuality and unsafe sex? Or is it a privacy issue?

Should there be standards on pornography?

Concerned Women for America say No- what do you think?

So do you both feel that limits on pornography should be for local governments to decide?

I actually agree with that.

You then will appreciate reading this Ann Coulter column from 2001 regarding a child pornographer.

I think there has been too many abuses of free speech. Some people think flag burning is free speech. It isn't. Spitting on the constitution is not free speach.

Burning the flag conveys a pretty clear political message, as does spitting on the constitution.

It might not be a message that is popular, but that is exactly the type of speech that the 1st Amend. is supposed to protect.

Similarly, porn puts forward a pretty clear social/political message: hedonism and promiscuity is a good thing. Again, that might not be a message that is popular with certain people, but the 1st Amend. exists to protect unpopular speech.

That is in public and I support that. You will not that I have not once voiced support for the public display of porn nor have I voiced support for adult'book' stores. But most of the people who wish to ban porn wish to ban it in all location, including private homes which I feel isn't the right thing for our government to be doing.

To a degree. I believe people's private lives are just that. As long as they don't hurt anyone and they keep it private, the government should butt out.

Not Federal but, like we said, local government should have the say with this issue. Some situations, like the one I described that Giuliani addressed when office, requires some sort of intervention and enforcement. It's not hard to figure out the difference in an area that is being destroy by porn. I know some will think I’m wrong because it’s a free country. In a free society there are laws set to protect everyone.

If I go into a store that displays playboy at the counter or other porn items, I leave and don’t go back. I find it offensive. That is up to the owner of that store. If the store sells total porn in an extreme fashion, I believe the people in the community should have a say.

There's a town on Long Island. It was once a very beautiful family area. Prostitution came in to that town. Too bad they didn't nip it in the bud. Then the drugs and dregs of society took over a piece. The town has never been the same.

You may have memories of NYC before Giuliani? I'm sure you heard about the difference Giuliani made in that city after Dinkins was in office. Amazing.

Agreed! I don't want to know about other's perversions. Privacy is the best policy with that. LOL.

It depends on how someone perceives the definition of the word porn. It can vary from person to person by degrees. The definition of porn is different from sex.

People can view "naughty pictures"/PORN if they want to, but let's not give it the U.S. stamp of approval.

You can also get really high on heroin, but I'm sure not wanting the government to say this is a good/legal thing to do.

We don't. Failure to outlaw something does not mean society approves of it. It can simply mean that there would be worse results if the activity were outlawed.

Getting blind drunk every night is bad, but we don't outlaw it because enforcing such a law would require too much government intrusion.

Most (up-till-now?) civilized thinking considers a small glass of alcohol to be harmless, whereas even a small dose of porn is considered to be harmful.

Should pornography be illegal?

That depends........................

Why don't you post a few dozen pics and we'll decide based on those?

I challenge your premise. I doubt most people consider porn to be harmful, nor is there any evidence to support such a claim. Nobody has ever "porned" themselves to death, but people have certainly drunk themselves to death.

Porn corrupts the heart and mind.

It is harmful, whether people want to admit it or not.

Howlin is a nice lady, but her and I disagree on a whole lot. In fact, in just the last hour, we had heated words about AG Gonzales.

That's because you never post TO the person you're trashing, just ABOUT them to somebody else.
