Well I missed yesterday. I apologize for that. Had to work. :-) And I haven't subbed to his on demand streaming video yet.
But yes, an answer sure can contain an attack. However being attacked for acting like a jackA** is probably justified more than being attacked for just simply disagreeing or challenging one's beliefs. I see a lot of the latter happening on certain threads. In fact I remember a bunch of atheists getting together and getting certain creationists banned for simply being persistent.
I heard your interview with Sean, but didn't catch your name in the beginning. I am glad you called him on the comments he made yesterday, but I wasn't satisfied with what he answered. I like Sean a lot, but he needs to know who his friends are and who are the enemies! WE are not his enemies--and there are always soreheads who slam everyone, not just him!
Problem is, he's got them pegged accurately, but they're a minority. Most of us -- the vast majority -- do not 'eat our own.' Nor are more than a few dozen Freepers "vicious," today's buzzword.
You handled the call really well, and I thought Sean did also. I'm glad he took your call and took the opportunity to explain himself further.
Sean's a good man and is part of the same cause that FR is. We can't afford fighting amongst ourselves.

LOL, I may be a kook, but I am rarely confrontational on FR. Just an average FReeper/Lurker. I don't usually disown my family, I stand by them, the good, the bad and the ugly. ;) Good catch though.

Its pure and simple.
Hannity made the comment for 3 reasons
1) To Promote HIS message board / blog
2) He genuinely has a bad impression from when 'he left'
3) He (like O'Rielly) looks to score points with the 'conservative' democrats that need to be tossed a bit of 'red meat' to earn Sean some 'street creds' with people that might agree on issue, but have baggage they need help getting over.
You see this with Orielly knocking internet bloggers, always make sure to note "you have these wacko sites on both sides"... 'just to be fair' when he is reporting on some wacko Liberal orgainization.
I think he made the statement and regretted making it becuase point 1) was was VERY transparent. Point 2 is weak becuase he says he hasn't been around "in years" yet makes a prettey BROAD statement, and point 3) I think he subconciously feels 'slimey' doing (though more than willing to go there)
Also I'm not sure if Hannity realized that with an EXPLOSION in usage (since FreeRepublic is THE site out there for Conservatives for a while now), comes more trolling.
Half of the 'eat your own' arguments started around here are started by DU'ers on a mission to stoke some fire anyway. There are marching orders, links to specific threads to target, rules for signing up (dont use certain words, make your nick 'consevGrl043' advice, etc)
Critizing Rummy, Immigration, and Relgion, etc are their favs to stoke since they can play devil's advocate easier.
I heard the whole thing yesterday and I wasn't the least bit offended (but a little miffed at the shameless plug at our expense). I knew exactly who Sean was speaking of when he was talking about us and I read their posts here every day with more than a little dissapointment - the kind of dissapointment one would have for an uppity loud mouth teenager.
I'm guessing new membership to this forum has gone up faster than normal since yesterday.
I heard some of Mr. Hannity's comments. He cited personal attacks on him and others. I know he is generally against ILLEGAL immigration. I supposed that he had expressed his opinion and was promptly accused of "anti-Hispanic, racist bigotry" and xenophobic on top of all that. Examine almost any immigration thread for examples.
Speaking of Hugh, his show just started.
