English Teacher Charged with Public Indecency

CHICAGO -- A Morgan Park High School teacher has been charged with public indecency after allegedly being caught in a compromising position with a 17-year-old member of the football team.
Police reportedly caught the pair on West Englewood Avenue earlier this week in a car that was reported as suspicious. When police arrived, they allegedly found the teacher and student half-naked, NBC5's Lisa Tutman reported.
English Teacher Suspended
Tutman reported that the female teacher, 27-year-old Mariama Buchanan, has been suspended and has been reassigned to administrative duties off-campus pending the outcome of an investigation. The student and his family are being offered counseling and support services. Buchanan and the student are due in misdemeanor court next month.
"She was one of my favorite teachers, to tell you the truth," said student Nathanial Carter. "Matter of fact, she was my favorite teacher. I still don't think she did it."
Rumors about a possible encounter between the student and the English teacher had been talked about among the student body. In a letter home to parents sent on Thursday, school officials briefly discussed the allegations, further explaining that the alleged incident was not connected to school activities in any way and was not on school grounds.
A Chicago Public Schools spokesman said there is no evidence at this point that any other students were involved, and that this appeared to be case involving only one student.
Meanwhile, students said they hoped that the incident would not reflect negatively on their school.
"It was very inappropriate what went on," said student Brittany Johnson. "But I think it shouldn't reflect the generalization about this school as a whole. I still think Morgan Park is a good school despite the actions of those individuals."

I am noticing an alarming trend where many males are treating these issues lightly because it is a female teacher. This is playing right into the hands of individuals who are seeking to minimize repurcussions for other instances of this behavior that they may not find as "cool", i.e. male teacher with 13 year old girl, male teacher with 13 year old male, etc... People are playing right into their hands with macho double-standards of conduct.
I went to this HS. They used to wait a few years after graduation and the get married. That was a long time ago.

The teacher was identified as Mariama Buchanan, 27, of the 9700 block of South Prospect, who was hired to teach English at Morgan Park just last February. It was reportedly her first teaching job. The male student is a member of the school's highly rated football team. Chicago Police have charged both with public indecency, a misdemeanor.
"The teacher was reassigned to administrative duty off-campus as soon as we learned of the incident," CPS spokesman Michael Vaughn said Thursday. He said CPS is investigating the incident.

If the allegations are true, the only disciplinary options under the CPS Employee Discipline Code are firing and/or criminal prosecution, under section 5-10 prohibiting "soliciting, commanding, urging, inciting or requesting a sexual act of a student; or intentionally or knowingly engaging in any sexual conduct or act with a student."
The teacher and student are scheduled to appear in court on the misdemeanor charge on March 24.
Morgan Park's football team is highly regarded as a class 7A state semifinalist last season, and the best in the Chicago Public League. Several seniors have signed with Division I schools.
It's not a "trend" but an ingrained perception in many societies that has been around for a long, long time. In the Bible, who gets stoned, the adulteress or the adulteror?
Let the flaming begin then, this is too important an issue for people to fall into leftists trap of crying "double-standards". This is no less serious than a priest engaging in sexual acts with the children of their churches. The last big minefield like this that the left led conservatives into was that of political correct language that surpressed free speech and shuts down two sides to an argument (we are right, and that is the end of discussion)- people must learn from the past.
Either way, it is wise for people to know when they are walking into a minefield.
But then my homework was never quite like this...
