Is Chinese Take-out Fast Food? (Vanity Lent Query)
Lent | 02/13/05 | socal_parrot

Posted on 02/13/2005 7:31:37 PM PST by socal_parrot

Hi. I'm socal_parrot, and I'm a Lutheran (Hi, socal). I gave up fast food for Lent (a good chance to get right with the Lord and drop a couple lbs.). This evening, I went to a local strip mall and bought some Chinese take-out food for myself and the little woman. The restarurant was not a drive through. I actually had to park and walk in. The whole process took me 25 minutes. Would this be considered fast food? Have I kept my Lenten vow?

Do I need to lay prostrate in the snow?

An hour later, I have the same dilemma again.

Yes you sinned.

For your penance, next time get plain boiled rice.

Okay SP, I am gonna school you here (I am a Catholic so I really have this Lent thing down...

When you brought the food home, did you eat out of the containers OR did you place it on dishes? My belief...stryrofoam=take out, but once the food hits a real plate...it has now morphed into 'cuisine.' There. Don't you feel better?

I used real dishes and actual silverware and provided my own beveage. I think the fact that I didn't order it by speaking into a clown's head is the main thing.

Chinese food isn't even food.

You didn't mention how much you paid.....did you steal the meal? That would be important information.

I paid and even put a tip in the jar.

Why the heck I tipped them for scooping food into little boxes, I'll never know.

I'm not sure, but I may have been to that Chinese restaurant.  Guy at the counter have almond shaped eyes, anthracite black, laser straight hair?  Didn't speak English so well?  Egg rolls come in the wax paper sleves?  Little plastic packets of soy sauce?  No knives, but chopsticks if you ask for them?

I think that's the same place I went to.

Chinese food may be prepared for you quickly but not on an assembly line where frozen food gets microwaved for you. Lack of a McDonald's style assembly line is the key.

You or your wife can make a decent hamburger at home, one better that Burger King's. Try making good Chinese food at home

Don't be silly, Owl. You live in Philly and the place that SoCal is describing is obviously the one I go to where I live, at least five hours away from you. Unless there's more than one Chinese take-out place where the workers all have straight black hair, some sort of an accent, and wear white tee-shirts under their ginger-sauce smeared aprons...

Romans ch. 14 talks about this situation.

This issue is between you and God.

Help. Being not a Catholic, but surrounded by them, exactly what is Lent? I thought Catholics are not allowed to eat meat during Lent.

Well if you are surrounded by Catholics, I hope they are being friendly and suggest you not make any sudden moves...

To put it as simply as possibly, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. We abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent (but prior to Vatican II we weren't supposed to eat meat on any Friday). Some other Christian demoninations refrain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday only. So, Catholics can eat meat any day but Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays during the Lenten season.

Lent it self is a period of reflection, penance, and prayer. When a Catholic (or any Christian) says that they 'gave up' something for Lent it means they are denying themselves to strenghten their faith. I am sure others would give a more theological definition, but consider mine Lent 101.

I think socal you might have covered your back by providing yer own beverage. Tell me, this is important...did either you or the missus use a straw for said beverage? Plastic straw, and you might be back into fast food hell...
