I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005
Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin
I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.
I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

Are you kidding? All I did was follow the instructions.
Should I be more wary of that?

Well, I feel awful for taking up all of your Saturday night with something I could have fixed earlier if I had paid attention!

Either SP-2 or Norton is doing that.
SP-2 is pobably the culprit. This new malware can control a registry and steps have been taken to prevent that. But they should make sys restore bypass the security. I guess they never thought of it or saw it as another opening.

Well....it is a very vital piece of the system.... so one must be careful ...because some changes will definitely do you damage... just depends on what gets changed...
there is some kind of log that XP keeps as he is updating your system...you should look and see if it reported a problem last night.
need help from someone to tell you where to look.

Yeah, it was one of the things that SP-2 adressed. I assume you got the fix from a SP-2 problem center.
The thing is, that I and ernest don't use SP-2.

Thank you all for your advice.
I have learned a LOT and have had a BUNCH of fun!
I am most certainly going to back up ALL my files so I won't be scared of a cold install again. (I probably should do one every so often, right?)
I owe each and every one of you for holding my hand, so if we run into each other on a thread and I'm being nasty, just remind me and I'll lay off! :-)

The thing is, that I and ernest don't use SP-2. Well I have it on one system but I have no reason to do the restore function.... There has to be a lesson in this whole effort.... What Howlin was doing well before we got involved in this thread ,, i thought should have fixed this problem.... I think she needs to register a complaint with microsoft.....

OK, glad to stay around.
I learned a bit about this particular problem.

I have actually "lost" them before, but a simple reboot (or a complete restart) brought them back.
The thing is, even though I wasted a lot of your time, I love stuff like this.
I love learning about computers and "messing" with them. It's like a puzzle, and I just have to find the thing that's going to solve it. I'll admit it's a lot more fun with all of you!

You know, you're right; I ran Norton Ingegrator, Restore, the whole thing. It SHOULD have worked.

This is one of those things that started with SP-2. I recall seeing it on the forums where they were all screaming about system problems. This is one, but the fact is, it shows up after install.
The registry got affected and the security did not stop it, but it stoped the fix.
it might be just program degradation from operating a long time.
I dunno.
Enjoyed it!

Yes, it was.
I am constantly amazed at the wealth of knowledge here on FR; and it also amazes me that even though we may knock heads about other stuff (Yes, I'm talking about ME), we still can come together on threads like these and have some fun.
So, can we all get together next Saturday night and do our taxes?
