I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005

Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin

I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.

I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.

Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

Yep. The registry WAS corrupted.

As soon as I did it and rebooted, there they were.

"and now we are going to disconnect the hard drive from the mother board and plug the CD's into THAT IDE connector on the motherboard.... and ...reconnect both CD's to the cable...."

That would be the way to go. But the only way to test is with her bootable install cd and that the bios is set to boot from cd, most likely it is if the pc is only a few years old.

Embarassed about what?

Nothing to be embarrased about...that is about the last thing I would have tried after going thru all the cable exchanges...

however...

So you read thru post #95 or what?

Good for you. Another reason for me to stay away from XP. Too buggy.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
YIKES!....I don't understand a word of this gibberish

Please don't ping me to any more computer help threads......humiliation just ain't my style. :0)

Your security must be prohibiting registry rewrites, would be a guess.

Don't feel bad. Microsoft probably told countless people that they needed new computers before they spent weeks figuring out what was going on.

Well, the thing is, after all we've done, I went back to my Freepmail and found the link to it in an email from a lurker Freeper.

You delete them and it forces the computer to go to memory and replace them.

It is a way to force a reg repair over the objections of security.

I always use safe mode.
