With Spring just around the corner, at least here in the southeast, it's time to think about spending more time outdoors and making our yards and porches more pleasant places to be. FReepers have such a wide variety of interests and talents, I thought it might be fun and educational to do a thread for bird and garden enthusiasts. I see a fair amount of discussion on some of the threads about gardening and landscaping, but not too much that is specific to gardening for the birds.
I've pretty much always had a bird feeder or two around, and that number has grown since I moved into a place last summer that has a big yard. I have a fair variety of birds and I have begun to think about developing it specifically to attract more species, not only for the enjoyment of watching the birds, but also to control natural pests that are prevalent in this part of the country, without resorting to pesticides. I know that the right combination of flora can discourage certain pests and also attract birds that will help keep the pest population down. I would love to hear from FReepers who are experienced at creating such a balance. I think it would also be fun to have a place to share our experiences as we develop them. I know there's lots of links out there with useful information and I make use of them from time to time, but it's just not the same as having discussions on a forum where we have experts on everything. And I don't know of any place else on the web so animated by wit, along with wisdom, on just about any topic.
EWWWW!
Well, there is also those ultra-sonic thingies. I'm told they are very effective. I used a small plug in one in my kitchen last year and didn't see any bugs in there all summer, except for a couple of flies. I don't know if they would effect the birds outdoors though. It'd be something to look into.
Much better!
LOL! Anything is easy if you know how!
Those are just gorgeous pictures you've posted. :)
Oh My Becky! What a horrible experience. Like you, I'd be very vocal to the Dr. to get that thing out of my ear! When I was first married we lived in a small apartment. One night I woke up with something moving in my ear. I had a SilverFish in my ear. I totally flipped out.
I was luckier than you, I got it out myself with one of those ear removal bulb things. I've never been the same again. LOL!
Great picture:)

Yes, it's much better to see the actual subject in the picture. :)
Thank you Becky!
The funny thing about it was, NO ONE, not even my husband believe it was a moth, But I was riding in the woods and I had noticed there was a bunch of them flying around me all day. I knew that was what it was.
When the doctor first looked in my ear, she didn't go deep enough (do you know HOW deep your ear holes go,,,I didn't till then when I felt her go in), she pulled out her scope and said there is no bug in your ear. When I finally convince her to look again she really pushed that scope in far, and suddenly said "There is a moth in your ear"...LOL... I just said "Duh, now get it out:)" When she got it out, several others, doctors and even the patient in the next area had to come see it flopping around in the tweezers. She put it in a cup, I think she saved it:).

Oh, and I've heard since then that putting bugs in people's ears was a form of torture in the old days. I know it would be torture now:)

Posting pictures is a blast, that is why I'm anxious to get my camera fixed.

I HAVE ONE. IT WORKS.
It certainly is! That last one of the cardinal was great, and just the right size.
Speaking of pictures...:)
We have tons of these little white and purple daisies growing in the field.
Can't wait 'till the bluebonnets bloom!
Those are lovely. And they are wild! I didn't know what a Blue Bonnet looked like, so I checked google images. They are gorgeous. I can see why you are anticipating them!
LOL.
That is to funny.
I have suet out for the birds as well as seed. I enjoy seeing the different birds, especially the woodpeckers.
