Hi, my name is Sean Quinn. My original political philosophy was that of a moderate, then I creeped liberal, then joined DU. I had my fun there and became a donor (which I think's about to expire). I got a membership at FR, ORIGINALLY to just troll and to read as most DU folk do. After some serious post-election thinking and re-evaluating of my philosophy (a good issue for this is social security) I stopped going to DU. I started listening to 580 WDBO here in Orlando which advertises itself as "the conservative radio station". Thank the Lord, we don't get Air America here, so it's basically one of the few choices in talk radio. I heard Boortz (whom I love for his open-source talks as well as his political philosophy, yaay for linux) and then Hannity. The gentlemen I put down as a "rightie conservative" before now started to make some serious sense.

So, I say, HI. Though I have an account at DU of the same name, I won't be going back there. I'm pretty sure that I've found a home for me here at FR.

I'm a bit of a neocon, in the extent of taking it literally. I am a new conservative. I hope to once be known as a paleocon.

What I'd like to know is where to find a good guide or some hints for a newbie like myself. Is there a guide? What's Smoky Backroom and GOP Club for? Stuff like that. Thank you dearly.

How can you tell when someone is zotted? Gawd, I hope it dosen't happen to me. :(

Just when you were starting to feel comfortable too. I'd like to welcome you to FR as well, and echo the advice you've already been given. I've only been here a short time, but I can tell you that if you were likely to be zotted, you would know why. No one gets zotted without good cause. It's likely that Jen had a past history, or posted something elsewhere. We may never know. You can tell if someone is zotted by clicking on their name at the bottom of a post, and looking at their about page. If it says "banned or suspended" they were zotted.

You sound like someone who thinks; so, of course, you were doomed over at DU.

Liberalism is about feelings. How many times did you read posts there that started with the words "I feel...". Liberals are often motivated by what they feel is "unfair". It's "unfair" that person X should be paid more than person Y. Or it's "unfair" that country A should be more powerful than country B. However, the gage of what's fair or unfair is completely subjective. What liberals fail to realize is that the politicians who pander to their notions of fairness don't care a bit about what's fair. They mouth the words that will put them in power. Once there, being the arbiters of "fairness" gives them the whip hand. It's about power.

Conservatives, generally speaking, want to be left alone. Letting government say what is or isn't "fair" gives the politicians too much power. We usually prefer to let things work themselves out. (Those of us in the libertarian corner are more consistent in that line of thinking.) Conservatism/libertarianism thus requires us to quash feelings of unfairness and think instead about the consequences of governmental attempts to remedy inequities.
