The Neverending Story

The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

We don't know all the facts. If there was no impediment to her getting a Catholic marriage and she didn't, then she's stupid. If she did what she did cause she or the boyfriend had unresolved past-marriage issues (that is, they were not free to marry each other according to the Church), then she has declared her protest to the faith. Maybe that's not "stupid," but it's disingenuous to claim victim status based on an illness when one is really faced with other impediments to marriage.

Would you be surprised if I called you a super hyprocrite?

Somehow, although it is 14°, we are managing to have freezing drizzle.

Wow! That must make for horrible conditions.

We got just enough snow last night (about 4") that it is on the borderline of "snowblower" or "wait for God to take care of it".

It is windy and the snow is light fluffy powder so I have decided to wait it out for a while. It is so light that a broom was enough to sweep it off the steps. Yah, my mind is made up - wait it out.

Toyota develops special "Presidential Edition" Tundra

I'd much rather have that than a piece of Green Bay tundra. :-)

(Don't tell the PETA people about the Ostrich leather).

"Bruschi" is a great football name. Pronounced "Brew-ski," of course.

He stopped drinking beer a few years ago because he said he approached beer drinking just like he plays football; "all out".

So have you converted to being a Panthers fan, or do you still root for the Redskins?

How can you be a "fan" if you "convert"???

I still root for the first team I followed in each sport.

I suppose I will get to the point that I enjoy watching the local team, and will "root" for them unless they're hurting the Redskins... but I'll probably always follow the 'skins.

Actually, support here is pretty split between the two teams. Washington was the "local" team until the Panthers moved in.

Not at all. You rarely make any sense.

When the AFL was organized in 1960 the NY Giants were Boston's "home" team and their game was piped into Boston for quite a few years. Things began to change after the Jets beat the Colts in SuperBowl III and the AFL reached parity with the NFL.

Now there are probably as many NY Giant fans in Boston as there are "real" Catholics as defined by SD, ie a few. A very few.

It has turned to snow now. We were expected to get 1-2" today; the freezing drizzle was just bonus, I guess. There is a chance of more snow for the weekend, but it's going to take a lot to catch us up to seasonal averages.

There are always ways to move quickly, especially in grave circumstances. Especially, one would think, for someone employed in a high position in the diocese. Joe Schmo wanting to get his routine "my fiancee's uncle is a Methodist preacher and we want to get married in his Church" is a matter of routine. "My fiance is about to die and we'd like to get married before he does" is a different circumstance.

She had other options then?

Well, you don't have to agree with everything but if you are going to be part of an organization you need to support their policies, I guess.

That's what the article doesn't answer or even attempt to. There's no reason given why she could not have tried to get an expedited Catholic wedding. That leads to the surmise that she did not because there was an impediment.
