The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

Well it's only pre season. Let's hope they, especially Favre, improve. :)

Favre played extremely well in the first two preseason games. As one local wag put it in the newspaper this morning, last night Favre was in playoff form. ;o)

The defense is bad enough, without a few starters missing from the lineup. Special teams have been atrocious all preseason. The one area where things had been clicking was the offense. So much for that!

My main objection to the rapture is that it is a theological novelty without any basis in traditional belief. I already stated that the idea is antithetical to the Christian economy wherein suffering is to be expected for Jesus' followers as they take up their own crosses. To expect to be "whisked away" before trouble comes is to completely miss the point of Jesus coming to earth to suffer with us. If He was not spared, why would we think we would be?

What about all the prior years that Christians have lived and died in peace having no more trials or tribulations then the unbelievers of the world. Is God suddenly going to require suffering because the end is at hand? Did Noah and his family suffer prior to the rain? Did Lot and his family suffer before the end of Sodom and Gomorrah?

If you've lived your life as long as you have, and have not noticed that suffering is a part of life, I'm not sure how I am going to convince you otherwise.

For some people their whole life is filled with pain and suffering. Will they too have to suffer even more along with those who have skated through life with relative ease? That makes no sense to me.

No one skates through life. That's the point. Some people suffer more than others, sure, but no one escapes. When bad things happen, we can either see it as a punishment from God, or we can see it as a sharing in the suffering Jesus endured, as an enobling experience.

And finally, as I just said, I don't believe anyone can be moved to repent without the prompting of the Holy Spirit. So if He is gone, there would be no "truly repentent person" for God to refuse. So if the Holy Spirit departs after the rapture, and never returns, all remaining people would be damned.

The Holy Spirit comes to us as a result of believing, not before.

You are mistaking the Holy Spirit becoming indwelt within us and the Holy Spirit prompting us to repent. The HS will not come to indwell until we have repented, but He will also prompt us to repent. Ultimately, all holy actions are those of the Spirit, not our own.

The next touchdown the Steelers' first team offense scores will be their first. Roethlisberger had a QB rating of 23 Friday night.

I don't know why not. After all, the Saints have manhandled the Patriots the last two years in the preseason and we all know they, the Saints, have won the SuperBowl.

Actually, the pundits say the third preseason game is considered the most important. That is why it is a surprise the Packers played so poorly.

The Packers didn't gameplan for their game against the Patriots. They typically only do so for their last preseason game. That may have played a role in their poor showing.

I was up at the Florida panhandle this past weekend near Apalachicola, and drove there on the gulf coast Hwy. 98 and saw the damage from hurricane Dennis just a short time ago.

It still looks as though it just happened. The houses are still in piles of rubble along the highway, along with piles of garbage and trash that they hauled out of the houses that did survive, and these piles run for 50 or more miles -- and they haven’t even began to pick any of them up.

I had planed on posting a couple of pictures of pole houses split in half, but after looking at New Orleans, southern Mississippi and Alabama, the pictures I took seem insignificant now.

I have never seen anything like that. I thought that 911 was horrific, but as far as damage to personal property and the economy, it beats anything I’ve ever seen.

I didn’t come home empty handed anyway, I either got food poison from a little greasy spoon I ate at, or I picked up a stomach virus that’s still hanging on.

My Daughter in laws mother lives in Mobile Ala. Her and her girlfriend were at my son’s place while I was there, and they left for home Saturday afternoon to be there to protect their property if Katrena caused any damage. Little did they know, huh?

I’m watching Fox’es footage of the looting that took place in the downtown stores, and it makes me sick.

Does any here have loved ones in the area?

Jim :-(~

My current lady friend lives part of the year in New Orleans, and part of the year up here. She was actually headed back down there last week. She stopped in Chicago over the weekend to visit her brother for a few days. She originally planned to depart for NO on Sunday morning, and get down there Monday evening. I'm glad she wasn't down there already when all of this happened.

She's a professional musician, and she also owns some rental properties in the city. I just talked with her, and she is still guardedly optimistic that two of them have not been flooded yet. They are in a higher part of the city. I'm afraid I'm not nearly as hopeful. I suggested tonight that she come back up here until she knows when they will be allowing people back into the city. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear there will be much left for her to return to down there. There's not going to be much of a call for people of her profession down there for some time to come.

Sad. I would encourage her to stay away for awhile too. I used to go to Jacksonville Florida several times a year. There is a short cut to avoid NO. I went by Amtrak a couple of times though and once had about a 3 hour lay over in NO. There was a cab driver there named "Mad Dog" He took Joshua and I on a tour for 20 dollars. We probably drove 45 minutes or so and he had stories about everything. I couldn't have asked for a better tour. He told me "now you go get your husband and come on back" I hope he made it out ok.

She should be happy to have avoided the danger. I am not optimistic that much of anything is going to be left in a usable condition. I also fear they are seriously downplaying the death toll.

I think you're right about the death toll; there have been hints that it is much higher than has been reported. Thing is, there has been no official attempt yet to deal with fatalities, because they are concentrating on rescuing survivors. What we are hearing about deaths is coming from the media, not official sources. Once rescue efforts have completed, and they start dealing with the fatalities, then I expect the numbers will climb.

I was reading through the Times-Picayune online forums late last night, and based on reports by locals, the uptown area, where two of her properties are, has so far been spared from the flooding. That may change if they don't get the levee closed.

Is there a connection?

I recently had some landscaping and a 1/4 acre of lawn reseeded. I was afraid a lack of rain and our "voluntary" water ban would result in a "dead" 1/4 acre.

The landscaper assured me he had prayed to "Our Lady" and she would take care of my watering needs.

I am getting rain but was it necessary to devestate a good portion of the country simply to provide for my water needs?

Is there a connection?

IOW - Don't be silly.

I did some studying on the subject of whether or not God will completely remove His Spirit during the tribulations, and here’s what I found.

God said in Genesis 6:3 -- that His Spirit would not always strive with man, but He was referring to how long he would suffer with us and how long our life span would be.

In Rev. 11:11, this is during the tribulation period, and Gods Spirit came down and went into these two witnesses, so His Spirit is still working here on earth during that time.

2 Thess 2:6-8 still means that God Spirit will leave the earth with His Church during this time, but not His Spirit which has worked with man since the creation.

The Holy Spirit that was promised by Christ at Pentecost, which indwells each man when we become a believer will no longer be given freely as now.

During the OT times, God gave His Spirit to certain people, and for certain periods of time, and for different purposes, but it wasn’t a permanent indwelling as we find after Pentecost.

Druing the tribulations Gods Spirit will work with men as He did prior to Pentecost.

The collective church body of Christ has held back evil/Satan and used its social and political influence to shape governments and society to certain standards. With the church gone, the salt will be gone-- and along with it--- the verbal conscience that had been shaking its finger at the world all these years and saying, that’s wrong, that’s sin.
