After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
Likely the obvious?
An age limit was put on the Cardinals who can vote, I gather, was so that the chances of the feeble voting were reduced.
Bishops must tender a resignation at 65 for much the same reason, and to allow for peaceful turnover. Note that the Pope accepts the resignation when he pleases.
Take for instance, when Weakland was found to be paying off a gay lover. The Pope quickly accepted the resingation long ago tendered. This way the Pope doesn't really ever have to fire anyone. If you're really bad, he'll send a "co-bishop" to your diocese.

You are. :-)
But don't feel bad. They weren't going to elect you anyway. Not with Dave there. :-)
Either I am mistaken, or I accidentally revealed the new Pope's plan. ;-)

Whoops.... I thought you meant the voting age. 75 might well be the retirement age.
Are you saying that the bishop age of resignment is not enforced so it doesn't really mean anything? Do they ever take a bishop who has to resign and make them a cardinal to keep them 'active'?
Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Shenouda III. Are there any other popes out there? I thought I heard that there are 5 out there but don't recall.
Shouldn't there only be a need for one pope?
Because the Pope is Infallible.

Of course it's "enforced." The Pope enforces it the way he wants. The rule is that a bishop must offer to resign. There is no rule mandating the Pope must accept all offers immediately. He is the Pope. He makes the rules.

No.

I don't know what you are talking about. There is only one pope. You saw him on TV yesterday.

Aging bishops
When a Catholic bishop turns 75, he is required under church law to hand in his resignation, which may be accepted immediately or up to five years later.

I think he's talking about other "successors of Peter" from other denominations. I think Shenouda III is the head of the Coptic Church.
Hmmm. Didn't know there was a 5 year limit. Of course, the new Pope can change the rules as he sees fit. Remember how Janet Reno fired all the DA's in the country?
SD
Coptic Orthodox church, yep.
The Orthodox churches are allowed to have their own Patriarchs, or "Popes." They kind of insist upon it.
SD
Odd that there has never been a "Pope Joseph". Ratzinger could have gone with that. He would have been the first pope since Marcellus II to use his real name.
Or a Pope Mary. I think certain names are off limits.
SD
I think Pope Shenouda III is a successor of St. Mark.
Naw. I'm just hoping this one doesn't sleep in the woods. :-)
"Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God", although this is rarely seen or used in full
the formal title of the Patriarch of Alexandria is
"Successor of Saint Mark the Apostle, Shepherd of Shepherds, Father of Fathers, Supreme Pontiff of All Metropolitans and Bishops, Judge of the World, and Beloved of Christ", often called the "Ecumenical Judge"; the Coptic Patriarch is styled "Pope of Alexandria and of the See of Saint Mark the Apostle").
Pope Theodore II is the Orthydox Pope. So, I guess that's three Popes, so far.
Make that Orthodox.

Liliah may be here sooner than later. Momma going for a u-sound Friday morning and he may induce. The doc says the baby getting too big. They said the same with her sister though and she was barely 6 pds. I stay as far away from OB as I can but I wonder if they measure bone length to determine size. Their daddy is long waisted and very tall (yes, he's Eddie's:')and Sarah is going to be tall too. I'll have to ask one of the baby nurses.
