After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
One good thing about Ratzinger's election is that, given his close association with John Paul II, I think we can safely say that he won't be bringing back the papal coronation/triple tiara crowning from which the last few popes have abstained.
I would venture that that is a safe bet. We like our pomp, but I think the image of Servant is better suited than Sovereign.

We Luv ya al_c :)

Most cool!It sounds like a lot of fun. I was thinking the other night after you posted about that night I was out in the back yard during a tropical storm watching the wind blow the fence down. Everyone else cozy inside but the windows boarded up and I had to see what was going on.
That's why the first rule for spotters is "be safe". As the guy from the NWS drily put it, "dead spotters aren't very useful".
Hey thats pretty cool man!
You should take a camcorder with you next time and get some footage, this kid that used to work for us does this all the time, hes got a couple of tornado's on film that he and another kid were chasing.
I been taking my blood pressure at home, the old doc in my building put me on med for this about a year ago and the damn side affects are worse then the high blood pressure, and besides that after having read up on blood pressure and testing myself at home I don't think I HAVE hight blood pressure.

No doubt. After Adrienne was born, I was having more frequent episodes of heart arrythmia, and they put me on some medication. I had more episodes during the year in which I took the stuff. Then they decided to switch to a different medication. When I took the prescription in to get filled, the pharmacist told me that what they had prescribed was a pretty hefty dose of blood pressure medication, with all the attendant side-effects -- and I don't have high blood pressure. Needless to say, I tossed the prescription. I swear, you'd better have a good sense of your own health and what works for you, because the doctors don't seem to have a clue. Its either write a prescription, or cut you open and take something out. Oh, and by managing my arrythmia on my own, I've had only a single episode in the last 3+ years.
and besides that after having read up on blood pressure and testing myself at home I don't think I HAVE hight blood pressure.
Some people test higher at a doctor's office than they do at home. This is called 'white coat hypertension' -- the anxiety about going to the doctor artificially raises your blood pressure. Also, you're a bigger guy, if they don't use the proper size cuff, your reading could be artificially high. Are you using an electronic monitor? If you are consistently getting lower readings at home, I'd take that as your 'normal'. You can always take your monitor in, and compare it to the doctor's reading, to see if they are close.
When you take your pressure at home, wait until you've been up for at least an hour, then sit quietly for five minutes before taking the reading. Drinking caffeine can temporarily raise your pressure. As can drinking a large amount of water or other fluids. Exercising can lower your blood pressure for about 24 hours after you've exercised.

I didn't think about grabbing my camera until after I had left. I don't think I'd use my camcorder, because it is a pain to operate. But I could certainly take still pictures.
Here's the latest on that:
New pope intervened against Kerry in US 2004 election campaign
German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican theologian who was elected Pope Benedict XVI, intervened in the 2004 US election campaign ordering bishops to deny communion to abortion rights supporters including presidential candidate John Kerry.
In a June 2004 letter to US bishops enunciating principles of worthiness for communion recipients, Ratzinger specified that strong and open supporters of abortion should be denied the Catholic sacrament, for being guilty of a "grave sin."
He specifically mentioned "the case of a Catholic politician consistently campaigning and voting for permissive abortion and euthanasia laws," a reference widely understood to mean Democratic candidate Kerry, a Catholic who has defended abortion rights.
The letter said a priest confronted with such a person seeking communion "must refuse to distribute it."
A footnote to the letter also condemned any Catholic who votes specifically for a candidate because the candidate holds a pro-abortion position. Such a voter "would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for holy communion," the letter read.
The letter, which was revealed in the Italian magazine L'Espresso last year, was reportedly only sent to US Catholic bishops, who discussed it in their convocation in Denver, Colorado, in mid-June.
Sharply divided on the issue, the bishops decided to leave the decision on granting or denying communion to the individual priest. Kerry later received communion several times from sympathetic priests.
Nevertheless, in the November election, a majority of Catholic voters, who traditionally supported Democratic Party candidates, shifted their votes to Republican and eventual winner George W. Bush.

Yes, and thats what I'm a thinking too, your blood pressure never stays the same thru the day and one test in the docs office don't cut it, but the damn guy didn't tell me this, he just said your getting old take this med and pay the bill on the way out. And even being so damn big my blood pressure has never been high until I went in about a year ago for that one damn test. I should of looked into it earlier and not taken his word, never again! :)
BigMack
Good for both of you! That's awesome! :o)
Is it safe to bash the new pope yet? :)
BigMack
I am surprised they allowed Dave to post from the conclave. ;o)
Thanks:)
We are both pretty excited about the results we are getting from a change in our eating habits. I hate the word diet:), I personally did not start this to loose weight, I just wanted to feel better.
I know you are rather heatlh concious...you should get the book "The Schwarzbein Principle" The loss of weight is just a bonus. The most extraordinary thing about it is, we are never hungry, we do not crave anything, we never think about food, what we are going to eat next. I feel 100% better, I am back to riding again 2-4 hours at a time, something I couldn't do at all this past winter because I felt so bad. And even after riding that much, I can still do other stuff. Eating a balanced meal according to the guidelines of this book, which is written by a doctor, has finally gotten us to where we eat to live, rather then living to eat. LOL, Mack and I still discuss this phenomena at every meal:) because it's so amazing.
I'm recommending this book to everyone. It is really worth the read.
Becky
That's huge.
Is it safe to bash the new pope yet? :)
I believe protocol dictates you wait until his installation Mass is finished. Say about 7AM ET Sunday.
SD
Verizon wireless internet. Can you hear me now? ;-)
SD
Yeah, but he's looking/feeling alot better now:)
Becky
I'd say "no".
Since you obviously have no personal knowledge about the man, any knock on your part would be seen as knee-jerk acceptance of anything negative you read about him.
It would make you look cheap.
