The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

Bruschi in Good Condition After Suffering Mild Stroke (Update)

This story is as current as anything I have seen.

It has been confirmed that he suffered a mild stroke and is making a good recovery. May go home this afternoon.

The Patriots site doesn't say much more.

According to the "experts" he may have a complete recovery in a few weeks, if it was a brain aneurysm it could be months.

It may or may not affect his football future.

Fortunately, there doesn't appear to be any serious damage and he is expected to have a complete recovery.

We can only hope for the best for him and his family. Football has to be secondary.

I just have to wonder if some innocuous hit he took recently may have triggered the stroke. I remember in my martial arts class, my instructor telling us there are certain strikes and holds he wouldn't do full strength on someone over the age of 35; for example, a forearm strike to the side of the neck. You can lay someone out flat with a strike like that, and the force of the strike can jar loose plaque from the carotid artery, which could lead to a stroke.

Maybe. Maybe not. Strokes happen to people of all ages and "professions". It doesn't appear to be any more prevalent among athletes than to librarians.

You and I "could" change again if we live long enough.

And we may even reach the point where we admit we really know nothing.

Yeah.... but doesn't that sound more like egotistical bluster? Do you do a full strength forearm strike to the side of a 20 year old's neck?

It sounds more like "I will always pull my punches with you class... to avoid killing you. My hands are registered as weapons".

Of course I would not say this to his face.

The simple gospel was passed down word of mouth buy the first Christians, Josephus wrote about it and the plain fact is if it was never written in any books it would still have been known to us today because the everyday folks knew about it and passed it on, they didn't need any councils or sources to believe, they got it straight from Jesus at the time and passed it on.

And they didn't get the Trinity from Jesus or Josephus.

Yawn. Nobody's elevating Mary to divine status, no matter what hysterical people say on the internet. Get a grip.

Once again, what was the most important book Pope John Paul II ever read?

SD circa 1948: "Yawn. Nobody's proclaiming the bodily assumption of Mary, no matter what hysterical people say. Get a grip."

Prior to that the same could be said concerning Papal Infallibility.

Hello 'all.

Good point. There are certain factors associated with a higher risk of stroke. The story does not mention any that he may have. Here's hoping to a full and complete recovery.

It was just announced that Tedy Bruschi has gone home and he is in excellent condition.

One can only hope that it was a one time occurrence.

Get a grip. There's a difference between "elevating Mary to divine status" and recognizing her as "co-redeemer." This is ignorance hopped up on hysteria.

#1, it isn't going to happen.

#2, even if it does, it doesn't mean what the hysterical pepole say anyway.

Either way it's wrong, wrong, wrong.

And of course it's merely coincidence that the two legates signed approving the canons first. Happens all the time.

Interesting. Could you please direct me to a source which would back up this claim? I say this because the closest I could come, from Catholic Apologetics Sites, is that they signed after Hosius.

A list, any list, which shows the signatures, all the signatures.

Hi. How have you been?

Re. Bruschi. I misspoke. He is being discharged and will be going home in 1/2 hour.

Hi. How have you been?

Well, very well. I check in on the TNS thread every other day and it's never dull!

Re. Bruschi. I misspoke. He is being discharged and will be going home in 1/2 hour.

You have to be impressed with the Pats. They find ways to win and they earned that Super Bowl. Bruschi is a real warrior. I hope he suffers no lasting effects from the stroke that may hinder his career.

Good memory (or good search) you are mistaken though. I didn't ask what was the most important book you ever read.

The most important book JP II ever read "Saint Louis Marie de Montfort’s True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary".

Now another stupid question:

What is JP II's motto?

Yes. The speculation is that Ossius of Cordoba was the Bishop the Pope chose to preside over the Council.

You know who they were right? These two guys were priests NOT Bishops. What are the chances that two priests are going to be listed ahead of 250-300 Bishops? And they signed themselves as representatives of the pope.

Also, the Pope had not attended the previous council (Arles) either and the Popes who followed didn't attend Sardica or Rimini either. It was thought that it was improper for him to leave Rome. Note that the Bishops at Arles commended Sylvester for NOT leaving Rome "where the Apostles daily sit in judgment".

I'm leaving on vacation in a few minutes... so I'll presume your next argument re: Ossius.

Note that at the Council of Ephesus about a hundred years later, the same pattern emerges. A bishop (who in this case we KNOW was assigned by the Pope to preside - Cyril of Alexandria) signed first approving the acts of the council... then two bishops and a priest signed on behalf of the Bishop of Rome.

The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church (not Catholic) says " . from 313 to the Council of Nicaea [Hosius] seems to have acted as ecclesiastical adviser to the Emperor Constantine . . . it was apparently in consequence of his report that the Emperor summoned the Nicene Council. There are some grounds for believing that here he presided, and also introduced the Homoousion."

The histrian Gelacius of Cyzicus wrote: "Hosius himself, the famous Beacon of the Spaniards, held the place of Sylvester, bishop of great Rome, along with the Roman presbyters Vito and Vincent, as they held council with the many [bishops]."

perhaps we'll pick this up later.

And you hate the pope so much you assume that he is including the Bible as a "less important" book?

That's stupid and insulting.
